Just how bad is it

I own a 2004 toyota tacoma I am in need of assistance!! I was driving home and my check engine light started blinking!! I changed the plugs coil packs and wires. Codes read misfire on cylinders 2 & 3, the truck will not start now has 160000 miles on it it is in time and has fire and fuel!! Took it to a shop and they told me the engine needed rebuilt!!!! My question is how can it run on the drive home and not start the next day?????? I am in need of help please
