Better to replace it but $280 is a good deal only good thing about the insurance way I think you can get a OEM glass you can try call for estimate from aloha window shield repair he has some good prices but not OEM glass its recycled I think. When that happened to me before now I always put and couple beach towels folded on the Windsheild where it would hit just incase

Very interesting thread haha.. I went safelite.. They never had the oem windshield with the tint strip thing on the top so they gave me $50 off my deductible. I'm satisfied with their work.

OP, For future reference: check out USAA. I've been with them since they opened up to enlisted in 1997. They've done very well by me. Another tip is comprehensive portion of your insurance covers windshields. You can set your comprehensive coverage deductible lower than your collision coverage and it makes an almost neglible increase in your premium. For example, my collision deductible is $1000 and my comprehensive deductible is $100. We go thru windshields here in Alaska fairly often for various causes; new windshield costs me $100. And USAA is somehow partnered with SafeLite; they'll come to your residence to do the replacement. Additionally, chip repairs are completely free (no deductible) under their program.
And a little gee wiz ... hit a moose in July 2006 totalling the car I was driving, because no other vehicle was involved it was considered an act of nature and covered under comprehensive so only the $100 deductible applied. Actually made money on the pay off, but I don't suggest going that route as in the long run two cracked teeth needing crowns and the early onset of arthritus in my neck isn't really worth it.

Just wanted to pass on the comprehensive info; a lot of folks aren't aware of the difference and being able to set different deductible amounts. Glad you got your windshield taken care of at a good price.

x2 that's why I went with safelite, but my "chip" wasn't able to get fixed :(
