05+ DRL (Daytime Running Lights) Install OEM

I just finished the mod adding a switch to turn the DRLs off and on by cutting the green (with red tracer) wire as posted by 007Tacoma previously.

I got another fog lamp switch (

$92 84160-04010 Fog Light Switch, regular

84160-04010), 4 wire terminals (82998-12340) and a connector (90980-11090).

I connected one side of the cut green-red wire to terminal 4 and the other side to terminal 3.
I connected terminals 1 & 2 to terminals 1 & 2 on the adjacent switch so it lights up with all the other switches when the head or parking lights are on.

Everything works great.

Here's a picture with the new switch shown on the lower row of switches in the middle. This was a vacant spot before.
You do have to file a small slot in the opening to match the switch, no problem.

I would like to do LEDs too but the flasher is replaced already in this mod.
If you have the factory DRL then you must already have the larger flasher relay (81980-35020).

If there is an LED flasher that replaces that part then it would probably work fine. I don't know what (CF18) is.
You can try LEDs in there and sometimes the original flasher will work OK. If not they make resistors to add to the lamp circuits, but they get real hot.

Since you have DRLs already, have you noticed any heat or burn marks on the lenses or sockets?

 

Yea I know about the resistors but I don't want to use that. I would rather replace the flasher unit. Yes right now I changed the amber DRL to yellow ones and I see burn marks on the sockets

 

Just finished up the mod on my 2009. Pretty simple. Getting to the spots where it plugs in is crazy in the 2009. TONS of connections. But got it. Looks great! Took about 30 mins or so. No big deal. I was a little nervouse when I started pulling plugs lol, but I just took my time and went slow.

What is this I am hearing about burning the lenses? Is this happening with the stock setup or is from people changing to a hotter bulb?

 

I did the DRL mod on my '09 and after about 10 months (8K miles) I do not have any lense burning issues. Also all of my driving is during daylight with the DRL's on.

Those parts were 14.72 for the wire relay, 36.70 for the flasher and 12.00 shipping from toyotapart.com for a total of 63.42 including shipping.

 

This has been discussed before. With the lights on you will actually decrease your fuel mileage and will burn you headlamps out sooner.

 

How come you lose mileage w/ headlights on? Never saw that thread and I am curious. Would the DTRl lamps being on all the time have a simliar effect?

 

I was just relaying what I read. The info may be buried somewhere in this thread. With the DRL on only the DRL are illuminated. With the headlamps on you have higher intensity lamps plus taillights, marker lamps et al. It takes energy to illuminate these. The more lights the more energy needed. The energy comes from gasoline. I think I remember someone suggesting running with headlamps on would reduce mpg by 1 mile per gallon.

 

Yeah, that is a good point. Didn't think like that with all those other lights being on. Makes sense.

 

I used to use the headlights but got tired of the other lights dimming (like the clock). I also thought they were on a few times and they weren't. That may sound stupid but when you are in a habit, you miss the obvious (the headlight dash light).

I eliminated all of this and ensured the lights are ALWAYS on = DTRL.


I did NOT do it because of the increased MPG. That doesn't make sense to me. The alternator is generating the electricity necessary to run the lights and the alt is always running and the battery is always charging.

So I'm a little skeptical about these two parts being all you need for this to work correctly.

Observations:
These bulbs have basically three settings they can be in; Off-Lo-Hi. From what I've always seen in DTRLs is when they are on they stay in Lo all the time. When the flashers or blinker come on they switch between Hi and Lo. Well from the pics posted by people in here who have done this and a couple people mentioning these being so bright, looks to me like the lights are always on Hi. (could also explain some people's melting lenses with it being in Hi all the time and creating more heat)

Question:
After doing this method of the mod does the blinker/flasher blink on and off or Hi and Lo?


More observation:
Now looking at this version of this mod http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t164710.html The lights definitely alternate between Hi and Lo, demonstrated by the pics posted. This mod utilizes the third wire on the plug to the wire. I can only assume this extra wire controls the low portion of the bulb.

Questions:
Do trucks with DTRL from the factory Utilize this extra wire plug?
Am I on to something here?


I know it keeps being said that these two module things is all Toyota would do to put it in, but my logic and observations are telling me that there's more to it. I think you need these two parts in addition to that third wire being utilized and wired into the main harness somehow (not just wiring it up to the other bulb).

 

I installed the two parts and my DRL work just like a few trucks I test drove that had them factory installed. I think the bulbs stay on hi during the day so you can see them. The also go off and on when in turn signal mode. I have had mine for almost a year and I do not have any lens scorching issues.

 

I will need to disconnect the Daytime Running Lights from my Toyota Tacoma 2009 4x4 doble cub.
Please is thre any body to know how to do that.

Go to the first post in this thread and reverse the procedure if you have factory style DRL with the amber turn lamps on.
This would not be for a headlights on DRL.

The original flasher part is 81980-02030 or at least thats the number of the one I took out to install DRL.

 

You basically have to get the fuse panel loose, locate the one appropriate wire and either snip it or install a switch.
