Ive got a set of newer tacoma aluminum 17 in wheels and wanted to put them on my o4 tacoma. 285/75/17 are hitting the UCA way before they even get close to the hub, I'm assuming I'll have to get spacers if I want to run them. Done a rough measurement and it looked like I would need about a 3 inch spacer, does mm this sound right?

If you need 3 inches per side you need a smaller tire and a smaller spacer. There are no 3 inch spacers and they wouldn't be strong enough for the street.

the 2nd gen wheels have 5.25" BS
    1st gens have 4.5" BS

this means that there's about .75" of wheel that is now tucked into the fender more so than your 1st gen wheels. you don't need 3" wheel spacers (and I'm not even aware of anyone who would make those; way too dangerous)you'll probably need some 1.25" wheel spacers from Spidertrax or Bora.
