code 0012

I'm new to the site.I'm also the unlucky owner of 06 TRD 4x4 which has been nothing but trouble so far.
I took my truck in for it's 36,000 mile service and for a timing cover leak.The dealership also informed me something in the rear of the engine was leaking.They were not sure if it was the rear crank seal or the head.They went ahead and replaced the front crank seal,rear crank seal,re-sealed the timing cover, and replaced the no.1 head gasket.
All was well for about three or four weeks.Now my truck is setting a 0012 code.Cam sensor bank 1 timing retarded ,or something like that.It is also having a slight surge at low speeds when cold.
Has anyone else had this problem?Is their something they could have done?I'm not sure if I should take it back to the dealership or fix it myself.

 

What's odd is it took about three weeks to set the code.From what I've read their is supposed to be a filter on the sensor.I'm wondering if they got some gasket material or something in their to clod it.I did notice the variable valve timing isn't working right.It just does not have the pep on hills and acceleration it did.
I'm trying to decide what's the best way to approach the service manager about it. So far they have been good to me. Hopefully they will not let me down this time.I have spoke with the service manager in the past and he seemed like a nice easy going guy.

 

I found the sensor. Reads good works fine off the vehicle.Now if I can find the filter.

 

I dropped my truck off at the dealership for my 0012 code. Hopefully they will treat me right. They haven't let me down so far. When I find out what the issue is I will post it.

 

Yeah,I just got it back this evening.

They replaced: 1 camshaft timing gear assembly part#13050-0P010 Warranty
2 Gasket #90430-16007 Warranty
1 Oil Controller Filter #

The receipt says it was replaced according to TSB.I couldn't find any filter or TSB.The Toyota parts guy in Nashville also couldn't find a filter. The Service manager also said their was no filter when I explained the situation on the phone.It is driving fine and seems to be fixed.Tomorrow will tell me for sure.The code is on a two trip detection.Before it would drive fine 1 minute then usually after it warmed up or on the second trip is when it acted up.For future reference for other members the symptoms were rough idle and reduced power especially around or above 2,000 RPM.It was a struggle at freeway speeds.4cyl cars would run off and leave me.

P.S. The surge was a one time occurrence and never happened again.

I will post tomorrow as a final verification.

 

I still can't help but wonder. Was their unnecessary worked done before with the head gasket? If it was it may have backfired on them. I still wonder was their really a TSB?Or did they just f up?If not I don't see why they would have listed it.I guess I will never really know for sure. They haven't given me any reason not to trust them yet I guess.

 

More than likely, the tech left a bolt loose, and damaged the sprocket, sensor, and anything else around that area. It's easier to tell you it was a TSB, than a mistake.

I see stuff like this on a daily basis.

 

I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case. I did find a bolt loose on my valve cover and a hose clamp off my radiator hose. I don't see how the hose didn't blow. It's about a 30min drive from my house to the dealership. If I wanted to be a ass about it I could have just let it blow and overheat.
