I have had my 2004 Crew cab Tacoma for 2 years and 30000 mile. In the past month it has started making a squealing sound when it is in gear and I am completely stopped. When I put it in Nuetral or park the noise goes away. Sounds like a belt squealing or slipping but it is only when stopped in gear. Anyone know what it could be?

    Hi Kit.
Sounds like something is rubbing either from the engine/exhaust or body to the engine/exhaust underneath your truck when the engine is under a load.
With the engine off and parking brake on, crawl up underneath it and have a look around. Look for things that are touching the exhaust system, engine block and so forth.
If you are the adventurous type and I don't recommend this. Pull the parking brake and have a friend start the truck, push on the brake peddle and put the transmission in gear while you crawl underneath looking for the cause. Make sure you have a trustworthy friend. Take a can of DW40 or equivalent with you so if you see a suspect cause you can spray it to see if the squeak goes away.

I say check your idler pulleys, they are notorious for going bad at around every 30k-40k miles. they use the same idler pulley for both the a/c and the PS, the alternator and water pump don't use an idler pulley because the alternator is used to tighten that belt.

the one on the bottom is usually the first to fail and to check it just grab it and see it it wiggles, if there is any side to side wiggle then the bearings in it are shot and you need to replace it. also check the tension on all your belts, they should only have 1/4" of movement when pressed on, you don't want it any tighter or looser then that. if its looser the belt may slip and squeal and any tougher puts too much pressure on the bearings of a/c, PS, and water pump and something will start leaking from those seals

Ok thanks guys. Checked the belts and they seem all good. Tried to get under it with a buddy putting it into gear...... of coarse no noise. It did make the noise when I was rounding a corner and accelerating. It sounds like it is tranny or just in front of tranny.

check your exhaust gaskets, they may be leaking when the engine rocks from accelerating or in turns. an exhaust leak can sometimes kinda whistle and sound sorta like a squeal

engine V6 3400 TRD. It makes the noise when I am not pushing on the gas just on the brake when its in gear. I have been checking everything and the damn thing wont make the sound when I am checking it. The engine and truck has 173k on it. But has been taken care of.
