So, last year I bought my 2014 tacoma, brand new. I do the maintenance etc. As a mechanic, under load 1500 to 2500k there is an extreme knock. I believed to be a mis adjusted or cracked valve spring.. Every other RPM seemed fine so TONIGHT I tried another test.

Shell 93 octane, taco tick just about went away, and the valve spring noise is no more. Now Toyota recommends 87 octane.. obviously this is not a smart choice, at some points, I was unsure if my motor would last at said RPM.

Is there a Recall/TSB or anything for either spark/ignition timing or fuel maps.. I dont like this.

There is, not sure if it applies to your truck or not. #TSB-0064-10
The best way to tune it right is to get http://urdusa.com/store/Electronics...8/URD-AFR-Sensor-Calibrator/product_info.html a tuner from URD and tune it yourself to whatever fuel you would like to use. That said, the motor is fairly high compression and will spark knock if you lug it. Doesn't seem to hurt anything if you do, it's pretty common. Don't let it go below 3000 rpms and it will never be a problem. :D

Just remember the 1GR engine has a 10:1 compression. Pretty high IMO for a truck motor but it is more efficient that way compared to some of the older motors Toyota uses for their trucks. Heck my 92 Integra with a swapped B18C1 has a 10:1 in stock form and it's has to run 91+ octane.

Appreciate all the info guys, I will be using 93 from now on, until I can throw a tune into her! I thought buying a truck I wouldnt have to mess around modding TOO much.... boy was I wrong. Once a car guy, always a car guy.

Hah! Stock sucks. Fwiw, I ran several tanks of 100 octane (on the Autobahn in Germany and VP race fuel at the pump in Barstow) and it really likes that stuff.

100 octane in Germany is equivalent to 95 octane stateside. They use RON, whereas in the us we use an average of the RON and MON measurements. Perhaps they use less ethanol, I can't recall.

I don't think there was any ethanol in the Autobahn 100 at Aral, could be wrong. Either way, it ran better on it than "regular".
