Hey everyone, was just wondering if anyone has/carries traction aids with them, and if so where did you get them?

I have read a lot of reviews about treds and maxtrax and how they are both superior to the smittybuilt ones, but im having a hard time finding them somewhat locally. Looking to not pay an arm and a leg for shipping on top of the already expensive price for these things. Be even better if something of a cheaper alternative came about.

Any inputs on pros and cons of your set up, and where you got them would be very helpful.

    Thanks

    Reviews:

    Tred pros
@Sterdog "I've been running the Tred Pros since they arrived in the mail in the middle of last year. After multiple recoveries they still look brand new, even after a few in town folks floored the thottle on them like morons. I would highly recommend them."

    Maxsa trax-Amazon
@tacoma16 "I used these while winter wheeling and they did help a few people get unstuck. In terms of durability, tires were spun on them and non of the 'teeth' broke off in the cold. Really the only negative thing I can say about these is they don't stack very well. They don't fit snugly together, so storing them becomes an issue. Not a major one but for instance I don't feel comfortable having them on the roof stacks as they become very high and have lots of gaps unlike the maxtrax."

Hmm, I'll have to take a look at that. Thanks for the links. Those prices are pretty good considering.

If you follow through with that post some reviews.

I'm in Ontario too and looking to buy the maxtrax as well.
Let me know what you find and I will do the same.

ps. There is a group buy on, but it was put on hold for a while due to backorders not being filled.

Its funny you posted that since I was considering something very similar from princess auto. I feel snowmobile traxs would be very similar and may provide better traction, and may not slip out from under the tire. I also assume you may be able to get a pair of used traxs cheaper and be able to cut them to your application. Could be wrong though.

It would provide a similar traction aid, but you wouldn't be able to use it as a bridge, which I am not too concerned about. I really like how they are not as big, and more storable compared to the traction boards.

I would like to try putting together a Canada list as well for those interested and work out a shipping price with the vendor that you can all split that is reasonable. I'm not sure how soon you need/want them though. Hopefully we can work something out.

Will it go to one location which can then be sent out within Canada? Because I can see that being just as pricey as the $90 shipping with what you were offering

For the record, I'm not pointing any fingers at what you were offering. Its just part of the ball game with us over here, and its definitely hard to take advantages of deals like you were offering. Meant nothing negative by it, and hope it didn't come across that way over the interwebs.

Yeah they are pretty pricey, and I figure shipping will make it even worse, as the item is rather large.

May look into the snowmobile tracks as an option.

Hmm, I think shipping them across the country would still be a bit expensive. I was going to inquiry with some local off-road shops, but haven't had the opportunity yet.

Thanks for the link. Always good to get a ballpark on what it will cost to get it at a vendor.

Since they should be pretty tough to damage you could try to get them shipped Greyhound if Cochranes price is good. I know that's how we often ship large bulky parts to get a far lower price than Purolator/Canada Post/FedEx at work. Just more food for thought . I know I threaten my local shop with prices from other Canadian centers anytime they try throwing me a price that's just insane.

Oh that's a good idea. Will have to look into that if the local shops prices are crazy high.

I was also considering using an old pair of snowmobile tracks. Buddy of mine wheels and deals snowmobile parts, so may be able to get some for cheap. I know they wont be even close to the traxs, but for the price it may be worth a try.

Hmmm, wouldn't you lose the "levering inclined plane" action of the treads though by going with snow mobile tracks? They aren't solid, so your tire would have to ascend a steeper grade out of the mess you make than with the more solid traxs I'd think. When you watch youtube videos of guys using them it seems like the tracks help flatten the angle when getting out of loose material and that seems to be half of what gets people out with them. Just a thought.

Absolutely, I understand they wont perform nearly as well, but considering the cost, and what I have now (nothing :p) it may be worth a shot. Also, im specifically thinking of using them for additional traction, when stuck in snow, or mud. Though I would have to get over a hump, or the incline, I could just shovel this out slightly. You generally have to do some shoveling before using the Traxs anyways. Just an alternative I may pursue if the cost doesn't seem worth the hassle for the chance that I may need them.
