For what it's worth I agree with TashcomerTexas. I don't have much experience with 4wd, but I've been driving a '72 Chev 2wd Pickup with an aftermarket LSD for almost thirty years. A 2wd with an LSD (or locker), good tires, and some weight in the bed is almost as capable as a 4wd with two open differentials. At least that's my opinion. Open differentials are the main problem.

I just bought a 2006 Prerunner, and I plan to add an LSD when I can afford it.

Strongly disagree with the first two sentences. No matter how good the driver/truck is there are so many basic hills a 4x2 will just not get up.

Wouldn't this amazingly skilled driver STILL be able to do more in a 4x4?
If it was ALL driver skill, why would anyone have 4wd?

I like to see how far I can get in 2wd before I engage 4X4. I did the gray wire mod so I can start trying 2wd locked.

    Because 2WD is better!

Of course a 2WD with expert driver can approximate the capabilities of a 4x4 with no skilled driver. What kind of BS comparisons are going on here?

Everything else being equal, a 4x4 will run circles around a 2WD in almost any important category, especially when it comes to not getting stuck. End of story. Oh, but it's not only about getting stuck but also about not tearing the shit out of your vehicle and the trail and doing things the right way. Any serious (or honest) off-roader knows 4x4 > 4x2 bar none.

If you plan on offroading, people should do everyone a favor and get 4x4 so their buddies don't have to deal with 2WD trail antics. The only offroad reason for 2WD is solely go-fast LT.

2wd trail antics? What are you going on about? If you're saying your buddies find it a burden to help out someone stuck then you got some shitty friends. Just saying

^^^ exactly. anybody that claims a 2wd is as good off road in a trail that has any mud or rocks is pretty much a moron.

you can throw your 2wd through most things, but you will do damage. with 4wd, not only will you get stuck less easily, but you can crawl through obstacles that you would have to plow through in 2wd to not get stuck.

They call it 4wheelin for a reason. I've been driving 2wd and 4wd drive vehicles for 40 years and I'm damn good at it. But I would never bet my skills in a locked 2wd truck against an open 4wd and novice driver. Where I like to go that bet would leave me sitting in the parking lot most of the time.

OP - go with like minded friends and have fun. You will get stuck and friends will pull you out. If you want to come with me, bring a 4x4. :D
