Towing a Boat

So I my be about to pull the trigger on a Super Air and I am curious about towing it behind my SR5 04 Taco. Anyone have any experience towing 19-21 ft boats? Any weight problems or issues I need to consider? I used the search function already BTW. TIA

 

Make sure the trailer has brakes. I had trouble stopping my 18' bass boat with my 03 Tacoma. The trailer does not have brakes. My 05 tows & stops fine.

Plus with shifting into 4 & 3 for last minute stops helps.

 

I tow my 19' bowrider no problem.

 

you should be fine as long as it's within the towing capacity.
I've towed a 18ft. ranger behind a 1st gen for years, no real problems.

 

OK so I think I have found the boat that I am going to buy. It is a 21 ft Super Air Nautique that weighs 3190 dry. Loaded with gear and fuel I understand that it pushes 5500 lbs. My '04 2wd SR5 double cab is rated at 5000 lb capacity. Will 500 or 750 extra lbs present a safety concern? The drive to the boat ramp is only about 3 miles w/ no real highway driving. Will I be able to pull the boat out of the water w/o risking damage to the boat or my truck? If this will create a problem, are there any upgrades that would allow me to tow the boat w/o buying a beefier truck? Thanks for the replys.

BTW i read the bible on towing but it seemed more geared towards 2nd gen.

 

I used to pull a 21 ft. Sea Ray with my 04.. a little tricky pulling it up the ramp(4 low to avoid clutch damage)but otherwise it did great.. I would highly recommend a trailer with brakes

 

If you have the locker it would help you pull it out on a slippery ramp. A buddy of mine used to pull an 18 ft Bayliner with his 2004 double cab and it seeme to do fine.

I wouldn't think you can hurt it. Just drive slow and cautiously due to not being able to stop as quick and to save the tranny.

 

The 5000# tow rating is good for highway, hills and whatever....You should have no problems at all, even on the launch.
