Purchased a 1997 6 cylinder automatic Tacoma several months ago, which ran mint until complete service. Cold starts fine but by the third shut off takes several attempts to turn over. Check engine light is on but continually advises to check engine coolant (which was flushed). Truck now vibrates between 50MPH-60MPH, stalls and idles rough in reverse. Crankshaft sensor was changed, timing belt and alternator have been ruled out and battery is new. Even went to local Toyota dealership after my regular mechanic and they were clueless. Any advice would be appreciated.

replace sensor with a factory Toyota one. cheap aftermarket sensors don't work well on our trucks so if a shop did the work im sure they bought a cheap parts store stuff.

to help you further we need to know EXACTY all work done, adjustments made, and parts that were replaced

Usual mechanic purchases NAPA parts, so I'm almost certain crank shaft sensor is non-Toyota. Maintenance since I have owned truck has been limited to spark plugs, cap/rotor and all fluids. Truck had one previous owner and was purchased with 139,000 miles.

well its one hell of a coincidence if its NOT something they did so I think you have to assume the sensor they used is the problem and replace it with a Toyota one.

im not sure why they would replace it in the first place if everything was working fine before you brought it in so im wondering if they broke something and replaced the sensor trying to fix it and that didn't fix it.
