Hello, I'm new to the forum, just bought a 98 tacoma from a friend.

First thanks for this great online resource on these trucks. A friend at work as a 98 just like mine with 430,000 miles and still going strong. he is the original owner.

Well, both of the side mirrors are broken on the truck, half of the mirror is missing. The plastic looks strong and undamaged.

    I ordered mirrors from Amazon
CIPA 17194 Toyota Pickup OE Style Manual Replacement Driver Side Mirror
    and
CIPA 17094 Toyota Pickup OE Style Manual Replacement Driver Side Mirror

For about $12 each, but these are not right for the truck the mount is different. no idea why amazon thinks they would fit.

Should I just replace the glass? I have seen glass on ebay for $10 or so, but I would hate for it to not fit. anyone bought these? what are my options here?

    Thanks,

Those Amazon mirrors you bought are for "Toyota Pickups" (pre-Tacoma). When I brought that Amazon page up, it told me in big red letters that they don't fit my Tacoma. Its on you to verify the fitment, not Amazon.

just reorder the correct mirrors, I find trying to just replace the glass is never a good solution and often cost as much as just getting the glass

Can you clarify what you meant? Its my fault that Amazon claims these fit when they dont?
Maybe amazon has the correct info for your particular tacoma, it clearly says they fit my 98.
I did verify the fit when they arrived, and that's why they are going back for a refund.

I gonna give the mirrors by themselves a shot, I can always return them if they are not an exact fit. About $8 each cant hurt,

I have a pair of non powered mirrors off a '98. If you want toyota originals, shoot me an offer.

^^^ this is the best solution

the ones you buy are just cheap imitations and often the pivot joints don't hold well so every time you close the door they need readjusting.

buy some original mirrors from someone who has a parts truck

    My bad.

I assumed that your '98 and my '99 were the same, and that is the case for most parts. Amazon showed that the part would not fit for mine, and I made an incorrect assumption that it would show the same for yours. When I actually entered '98, it came back as fitting. It is Amazons error.

    Thanks for all the replies.

I can see that one gets what they pay for and these cheap parts are not ideal. One of the reasons I want to try to just get the glass and keep the original hardware.

If that does not work I'll consider the offer from koditten.

I'll post how the mirrors from Amazon fit in case others need them as well.

Okie, the Amazon mirror glass are not even close, The driver side is close enough to be usable, with some small gaps around. the passenger side is not even close, large gabs around.

I went with a pair of Kool Vue Mirrors from ebay
    $45 shipped.
These are an exact fit, the don't have the same build quality as the factory mirrors but they are identical and look great.
