I bought my first Tacoma a couple days ago - first truck ever, really.

    It was a used (CPO) 2013 SR5 with the V6. 20000 miles.

Love it so far. Love it. Yesterday I noticed while turning it off in the garage that the engine makes this decreasing, high-pitch whine noise for a couple seconds - almost like something is winding down. It kind of sounds like a turbo or something, but I know it's not that. So I thought I would ask here if that's common or not.

It's hard to hear if you turn the truck off while outside and the windows up, so it's not terribly loud. But while in the garage with a window down it's very noticeable.

If it's not readily obvious what it is to you guys I could make a video of it.

    Thanks.

Normal. I'm not sure offhand what it is, my last car did it (also a Toyota) and I think it was a smog pump. Someone will have the answer for sure, seen this question before. Congrats on the new truck and welcome to TW!

Taking a guess with what you have explained. It's the evap for the fuel system. Mine does also. Recirculates fuel vapor's and put's back in system.
Congrats and welcome here. A lot of great folks here .

Glad to hear it's normal. I figured it was, but thought I would ask just in case - seeing that it was pre-owned.

I'm sure I'll have a ton more questions down the road.

    Thanks again.

Just traded in my 2010 Off Road for a 2013 Baja and it made the same noise. Sounded like a jet engine winding down. So I started it up again and turned it off again, this time it also made like a metal screeching noise for a second (like when you start up your car and hold the key down too long). Kind of pisses me of, the screeching noise is worrying me. I've owned the truck for 5 hours

Perfectly normal. It's an air pump that pumps air into the exhaust manifold as part of the smog control system. It only runs for the first 90 seconds, then it shuts down.
