i checked with Bestbuy and the sales guy said I have to cough up at least $725.00 for them to install a newer 2-way Viper Remote Starter with alarm for me. They have some of the older models on the floor which are priced at $500.00 But they are a couple of yrs old models. I then checked with other local installers and their prices range from $240-$380 for remote starters that are not well known but gets the job done as intended. The only concern I have is that the transmitters are cheaply made. The transmitter can be replaced at about $40 when it breaks but I want a sturdier and well made transmitter on my key chain. Ummmmm..., suggestion?

For what it is worth, I had a viper on my last truck and was not impressed. For some reason the truck took 2 or 3 attempts to start when using the system (started fine without). If I were to buy another, it would br another brand. Also, the fob is single push start, no hold or double press, so a couple of times I had found my truck running unintentionally.

Do you remember which Viper you had? I wonder if your installer had it programmed weird.

I have a Responder LE 2-way (5204 IIRC) and it takes two presses for me to start my truck and it has never not started. The only thing that drives me nuts on the remote I have is that the buttons are on the sensitive side so sometimes I get an error chirp if I'm squatting down with keys in my pocket.

I have the viper 5704 alarm/remote start (paid $700 at a shop that does this largely for dealers) and it has performed outstanding for me.
Enjoy it so much, particularly this time of year, that just yesterday I had the shop install the additional smartstart module, allowing me to start it with my phone and iPad.
Been having fun setting it up and testing it--------quite cool:cool:

Directed electronics owns viper, and a host of other similar companies in the same field and are the leader in this field with vast experience and years of service. This can make for replacing fobs and other items easier if needed.

unless you have real experience, I would recommend professional installation though.
    Hope this helps.

I've owned Compustar on my last 3 vehicles, all manuals. One 1-way, and two 2-way auto starts. Never had a problem with any of them. When my truck gets in I'll be going with a 1-way from the same company, as I can get it installed for under $400. The majority of the time I use it I can simply verify vehicle start-up visually from inside.

1st I would not let best buy touch my truck or install anything in it...

Find a dealer from the Viper website and call around you should be able to get the 5806V installed for under $600 as I am having mine installed in 3weeks $590 w/tax....

I don't remember which model it was that I had. I do miss having a warm truck but I don't trust myself to leave my truck in neutral now so I won't get another starter.

I had my viper installed last year on my truck. Paid ~$530 two way 5704 and love it. The buttons aren't that sensitive on the new remotes. You really need to press it to work. There are million different configurations with these systems, so it's user preference.

X2 stay away from BB. Have a pro shop install it.

I put one of those transmitter covers off Amazon on my viper remote. Makes it less sensitive and protects the remote all at the same time. Deff worth the 14 bucks it was.

Can't speak from experience, but I am getting a Viper alarm/remote start installed the week after next. Remote start will be a nice feature in any weather extreme. I've read some negative reviews about Best Buy installs, so I'm sure it really depends on the quality of the install. I chose a car audio shop because I wasn't sure what I'd be getting at BB regarding quality of work. BB did have some deals lately, essentially waving the install fee. The key fobs seemed pretty sturdy to me though. Hopefully I don't have any issues.

Thanks for your inputs, guys. I checked with a certified Viper installation shop and they charge $650+tax for the 5706V and $850+tax for 5906V. I'm going to get the 5706V installed next week. That's still a lot of money for me but it is a lot better than Bestbuy.

Has anyone ever tried buying the components elsewhere, say Amazon, and having an installer put it in? I am thinking about going that route - but I'm not sure of all of the components I would need. Any one have any ideas?

+1 I loved my Compustar that was on my Tacoma. If my new truck didnt have it from the factory, this is what I would go back to.

I put a 2 way Compustar in mine myself for $310

It has a great range. I can start from my office probably half a mile away, with many brick rooms between us and no line of sight to the truck. It lets me know that it started and tells me the temp inside the truck.

A lot of your reputable shops will not install walk-in product as that only leads to headaches for them down the road. Also, check your warranty information. Some brands have a stepped warranty. Lifetime or several years when installed by an authorized dealer, while one year or less if self-installed or done by un-authorized dealer.

Had a vipor 5706v installed with remote start for $600.00. Included tilt and glass break, they also pinned my tail gate and hood, also magnetic break for my back flip bed cover. It's been great so far no trouble. I also wouldn't have best buy install anything on my vehicles. I use a reputable local shop. This type of Alarm usually takes at least 3 hours plus.

I have the Viper 5704 with auto start on my taco and i love it. i paid $525 for the alarm and install, and that was from an authorized Viper dealer. ive never had a problem with my auto start or any other part of it. the remote is kindof fragile though, i ended up cracking the plastic cover over the screen from it being in my pocket at work. but it didnt mess the screen up.
