We have a 2008 Toyota Tacoma 4X4. My husband went hunting and had problems with the back passenger side brake locking up. He would stop to look at an area, (not getting out of the truck or using the emergency brake), and when he would try to take off again the back tire was locked up. He would try to move forward and backward and he said finally there was a load clunk and the brake would release. This has happened a few more times since the first trip.

Any suggestions on what he should check first? The truck is stock and only has about 50,000 miles on it.

Maybe pull the drum and look for debris or anything stuck in the drum. Look at the brake conponents for wear. check the brake lines for any tear or snagging along the brake lines and the parking brake lines. ABS system sensor might be a issue too. Any check ABS light, light up? Or any lights?

He didn't say anything about any lights coming on, so I'm going to say no, but I will ask him about that.

it could very well be a leaking axle seal. If oil gets on the rear brake shoes, they have a tendency to lock up and drag.

Happened to me two years ago, had to change the axle seal and install new brake shoes.

He may even see the leak coming down on the inside of the rear tire.

    Good luck

No money, all went to truck...
my 2012 tacoma had rear brake locking issues. Usually happened after I washed it. Water would get in and seize up the drum. Had to have it cleaned out and serviced and so far no issues.
