Kenwood/garmin Nav unit questons

Planning to very shortly upgrade to a Kenwood DNX indash Nav and was wondering about the actual nav maps. I know you can get garmin topo's (are they included or purchased seperatly) but are other maps available?

Now, for work I have access to a great number of georefernced GIS maps for county and state level, is there any way to load these maps into a kenwood/garmin or are they required to be in a propiatary format?

 

Gamrin will charge you for those extra maps.

You can not legaly add in your own maps to any nav system without persmission from the Software maker. No matter who or where u get the data.

 

There are only 2 major map data providers, Navtec and TeleAtlas. I can't remember which one Garmin uses but all GPS mfgs have their data locked into their own proprietary formats. I doubt if it's hackable or even worth the time to try.

 

Try Google for custom Garmin maps or add maps to Garmin. Tons of results come up and there's a lot of info out there on doing it. If you have the time and/or know how I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult.
