After getting the recall notice I looked at my 2008 DC LB Taco to see if that was the clunking noise that started very recently and I had been meaning to track down. Sure enough, 2 of 3 leaves broken on passenger side rear. Called stealership, and they said they'd call me back. Called Toyota and they said take it to dealership.

How is this going to play out for me? Will the dealership fix it even though there isn't an approved solution at the moment? Will they fix both sides, or just the broken side?

Anyone with advice on how to handle this please help. If I'm going to get jerked around and end up paying for it anyway, I'd rather pay someone I trust to put on aftermarket stuff.

If they're going to charge you for springs, put in an aftermarket set. If they will replace for you, great. Until then, don't sweat it. Every dealership and manager is different. No way to know what's going to happen.

according to the recall letter that I have the dealership will fix the broken springs. As far as the recall itself, Toyota has yet to decide what they are going to do to make sure the springs stop breaking. But they will fix your broken springs...read the recall letter you have and you will see what I'm talking about

They should replace the broken passenger side, the drivers side isn't broken so they probably won't replace it.

I'm going through this exact thing, passenger side leaf is broken, my local dealership has contacted Toyota Canada but sounds like i'll have this wrapped up no later than next week, at least that's my understanding from the conversation I had today

Toyota advises there is no remedy to the bad springs yet. In the case of actual broken springs I think what they do is replace them with the same faulty springs and then install the new design springs when they get them.

You're only getting free springs because yours are broken , for everybody else Toyota has not released their fix yet

Update- Toyota authorized dealership to install OEM leaf pack on passenger side only. It sits and rides fine, I don't notice the difference between old and new leafs. They offered me a free rental and and only kept it a couple of days. Their prompt and professional handling of things definitely makes me think I'll buy another Toyota.

When they finally have a remedy for the recall......(or your drivers side breaks), you can go back to the dealer to have the drivers side taken care of (whatever that ends up being).

The only "fix" is to have new springs that won't break. For God's sake, I hammered and beat the shit out of the same set of leafs on my 1982 truck for 27 yrs and over 500,000 miles and they were still in better shape than the 50k ones on the 2005 AC in bought in 2009 or the 115k ones on my 08 RC. And the same weak ass bullshit is still going on. A clip to keep breaking leafs from hitting the tank is a sissy fairy bullshit bandaid. The fact that they only now are doing anything at all, and not because the weak ass leafs but because now a broken leaf could cause a fuel spill and the possible fire and hazmat epa cleanup of spilled fuel, after 10 model yrs is such lame bullshit. How about another class action lawsuit for diminished value like the one for unintended acceleration that I just got paid for? Why not? This is just as serious. Already got new leafs so they can stuff their clip sideways up their ass. They can send me more money for diminished value tho.
