I was getting at changing one component will affect the others. The backpressure will be reduced(great that's what we're after), and a restriction removed but the velocity of the exhaust will go down. You stated that higher exhaust velocity is better. Most cat backs I've installed increase the pipe diameter, not alot but it's another change.

Everything in the link I posted supports your arguement.

Some folks could've interpreted your statement the wrong way is all.

I guess my question is, how do you remove a restriction in an exhaust, decrease the backpressure and at the same time maintain or increase the exhaust velocity?

most factory mufflers are restrictive by design and serve only one purpose - to keep the exhaust gas quiet as it exits. removing that one component and replacing it with straight piping of the same size would actually increase velocity. by how much is another thing. just remember that ANY restriction will slow down velocity and hurt the entire power band.

what we as enthusiasts do for the street is a compromise... we want the best flowing system possible BUT without excessive noise. why do you think race cars are so loud?..... unrestricted exhaust.

that said, our trucks have one of the best exhaust systems I've seen on a non-sports car application. The muffler may be restrictive, I really don't know, but the rest of the mandrel piping and cat look about as good as it gets. plus the size of the piping is very generous, obviously supporting the large 2.7L motor we have. the only area that looks a bit small, imo, is the primary tubes on the header - but thats a whole other topic ;)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ridQXO0TTTg heres a video of mine. I have a thrush welded muffler and i originaly just had the muffler under the cab and nothing else...that sucked loud and abnoxious! but i did the turndown before the axle and its a nice sound on accleration and at idle almost stock love it. i can have conversations with the quietest person but also get a good rumble.
