Another question, when your building a system... Do you ever "go over" what you necessarily need and give yourself persay 'headroom' in something other than your amp?

 

I always match my amps to my speakers wattage wise. If you want to give yourself headroom you can but I would suggest saving up to do it right the first time around. Save some cash in the long run.

I always make sure my amps are rated for more power than what my speakers call for RMS. Not by some insane amount to the point where I'd be at risk of blowing the speakers, but enough to maximize efficiency. If your gain structure is tuned correctly, you are using quality equipment, and you're playing from a lossless music library, this will be nothing but beneficial.

 

Exactly. Nothing will kill a speaker faster than feeding it distortion, aka under powering it. A 3db overlap is desired which would mean 2x the power of the rms of the speaker. Basically, if your gains and crossovers are set properly it's very hard to "overpower" a system. I have 900 watts rms of power on tap for my front stage that are rated for 75w rms each, never had a problem and likely never will, although it is extremely overkill.
