Hello, i am currently in the market to buy a used tacoma, i previously owned a diesel F-350, but its time to downsize because i am moving. Ive read a bit of information about the tacoma but their is still a lot i do not know. I am looking for a 4x4, preferably double cab short bed, and i have a few questions.

1.) I am looking for a truck in the $12-15k price range, how many miles would you say is to many for a truck in that price range, what is the average lifespan on these truck?

2.) What are some signs that would turn you away immediately?

3.) Are there any common problems with these trucks that i could expect to encounter?

4.) Anything else you think i may find useful?

Coming from the Great White North:

You are likely looking at the 06-09 price range for one with 100-110k miles on it, as far as reliability goes that's going to depend entirely on the previous owner and what kind of 100k miles those were. Across the board, with the basic proper treatment and preventive maintenance you should be able to see 3-400k miles of solid use, even then I don't see many complaints from high mileage owners here or anywhere else.

1: Decent underbody damage, new paint job with no explanation, signs of excessive off roading like bushwhacking scuffs. Most ricer style mods with a young owner. Obvious out-of-place sounds the owner tries to brush off.

2: Heavy frame rust if not nipped in the bud, factory stereo can bitch out if exposed to long periods of excessive summer heat.

3: Don't expect it to be fast, get good gas mileage, or make your coffee in the morning and it will give you a long and prosperous life.

Not particularly, only major difference between say, an 06 and an 14 is purely cosmetic. If the frame looks solid with little more than surface rust, hit it with a rust preventative compound like Formula 3000 or Fluid Film every fall, 50$ goes a long ways.

Driveline vibration seems to be something of an issue with a number of members here, but it sounds a bit hit or miss and speaking for myself, Toyota makes a very solid truck. If you are here on TW you likely know more about the truck than 80% of its owners, buy one you like and enjoy it!
