On my way home from work this evening, i noticed my fuel guage wandering a lot. I had a little less than 3/4 of a tank. The needle would move to half way to the 1/2 tank mark while driving which I knew of before hand because of how the fuel moves while driving. However, as I stopped off the freeway, the needle went suddenly dropped to half a tank then would slowly go up and down. After about 2 minutes of being still, the needle would go back to normal. What could cause this issue?

its also a common problem to have a bad connection on top of the fuel tank so clean the connection and check the wires first, its the most common cause of issues.

Update: I park my truck in front of our house on a slight dlant. Pulled up with the guage reading 1/2 way between 3/4 and 1/2 a tank. I stopped and let the truck sit a little to see what the needle would do. It hesitated to move, and then suddenly started going down all the way til it wouldnt go any more. I pulled forward to level the truck out in the street and it went back to normal. Would this change the possibility of the electrical connection being bad?

Drop the tank or pull the bed, about the only two ways

it sounds strange but pulling the bed is a lot easier then dropping the tank to get to it.

to remove the bed, unplug the tail light wires then there are 4 main bolts holding it and disconnect any fuel lines, clips, or anything attached to the bottom of the bed (shouldn't be much) and then undo the screws holding the filler neck to the bedside and it lifts right off with help from friends. the whole bed probably only weights 100 lbs so you don't need a lot of muscle to do it.

Well, apparently the issue fixed itself lol. I didn't have any issues the past 2 days. So it was probably just the connection. The streets are bad in my area so maybe the bumps knocked it somewhat loose.
