First post so a lil back ground. First time with a toyota. Bought it 10 months ago. 1995 tacoma 4x4 3.4 295k miles. I bought it as kinda a favor for a friend who was hurting. It was neglected.
As soon as I bought it I replaced.
    Air filter.
    plugs and plug wires.
I used lucas injector sauce for the first 10 fill-ups or so.

Anyway I've put about 2-3K miles on it with no problems. On the way home last night driving around 70mph it starts running rough. Shuddering under load. Usual misfire symptoms. Limped home. CEL flashing.
Got home and pulled code 0305 (#5 misfire)

I will begin troubleshooting soon but I have a question about the coil pack. It uses a master/slave setup with two cylinders firing together. Question: Can these packs fail in only one of the two cylinders it fires? I'm kinda leaning toward being able to disqualify the pack as a problem having only 1 cylinder throwing a code.

Is this proper thinking for these engines?
    Thank you all in advance.

Hey, Welcome to Tacoma World. Sorry to hear about the issue. Im not 100% sure about the coil pack faulting only on one but... I had the same issue on my dads tundra. So we swapped two coils to see if the code cheanged location. That then indicates its the coil pack. Havent done that on a 3.4 but might be something to look into doing. Keep us posted. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the post Tim. After checking out the difficulty in getting to the injectors on the 3.4 I decided to go ahead a put an ignition pack in to rule it out. To my surprise it fixed the misfire. I generally like to wait awhile to decide something is fixed but in this case the misfire was so bad and constant that I believe the coil pack fixed it. I've driven about 200 miles since putting it in and all is good again.
