I have a 99 SR5 Tacoma and i am interested in putting a bull bar on the front but I don't want to have to sacrifice safety for the look. So i need to know if in Tacomas of my year if the sensor to deploy the airbags is when the front bumper is hit hard enough or if it is just a shock sensor somewhere else. Thanks

The airbag sensors are almost inline with the front of the engine on each fender. Pop the hood and look on each fender and look for yellow sensors. Those are airbag. Also from what I have seen from what bull bars are made of, just for looks not sturdy at all.

So they work off of a rapid rate of deceleration not actually if you crunch in the front bumper?

I think the front end has to crunch. I was just in an accident about 2 weeks ago. I had a plate bumper on the front and ran into a kid that turned in front of me. I was going about 40, but hit the brakes hard. The bumper took most of the hit. It pushed my radiator support back, but not far enough to crunch up where the sensors are, and the airbags did not deploy.
