the dealer will probably show you the page in the owners manual that states that the consumption of a quart of oil at xxx miles is normal. Ford did this to me. They said 1 qt per 1000 miles.

Wasn't there a person who's Tacoma was gaining oil on the forum recently? Maybe the trucks are hooking up and sharing fluids and in the excitement forgetting to bring their levels back to normal!

He said "last oil change" meaning the previous oil change. So:
-- The previous time he changed the oil, it had consumed enough to get the oil level down to a couple millimeters blow the lower dot.
-- The most recent time he changed the oil, it was barely on the tip of the dipstick.

He's just saying that the motor is consuming more and more oil as the miles rack up.

This statement seems extremely suspicious to me:

Most pistons do have oil return holes in the oil control ring groove.

Plugged oil return holes in the pistons is a know problem on some older
    Toyota four cylinder engines.

This x2. Can't say I've ever heard of a 1gr with the issue, but severely over-extended oil change intervals could make it happen I suppose.

This thread stinks like fish to me though.:notsure:

I was thinking oil return from the head galleys, crank etc... I wasn't thinking about the oil control rings....

    I am corrected.

    Some stuff...
Ironically I changed my oil yesterday at 14,800 miles and was 2 qts low! Called the dealer and they said to bring it right in.

Just got back, they looked it over from top to bottom but visual inspections didn't yield anything suspect. The said not to mess with it (check/fill oil) and return it in 5,000 miles for another look so we'll see what happens....

How did you determine it was 2 quarts low?

Did you measure what came out of the engine? Did you add in what was in the filter?

I hope I don't Jinx myself, but I have never had a new car that used any oil. Or a Toyota that used oil even after 200K miles.

Cross fingers, knock on wood etc...

Not sure if this will help you or not, but I received this yesterday regarding my I4 Camry. It does not specifically say V6 or I4 or any vehicle although it does reference my Camry VIN number:

I received a Warranty Enhancement Program letter (notification ZE7) that announces that Toyota is going to repair engines with excessive oil consumption issues or reimburse those of us who have out of pocket expenses after having it repaired!!!

It reads "at this time, Toyota is currently preparing the necessary parts to implement this Warranty Enhancement Program", it will take several months to build the necessary parts. Therefore, we will be notifying you of the upcoming warranty enhancement program and providing means for you to seek reimbursement for previous repairs to help minimize any out of pocket costs you may have incurred".

It also states "the Primary Coverage offers warranty enhancement until October 31, 2016 regardless of mileage. After the Primary Coverage period ends, the Secondary Coverage is applicable for 10 years from the date of first use or 150,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Please note that this coverage is for warranty work performed at an authorized Toyota dealer only".

    mechanic=fail
    check oil=fail
truck still under warranty=yup I assume, it is a '13
    a problem, definitely
solution=take to dealer, have a factory oil change done (this one time), make note of problem, return after 3000 miles and go from there...

these engines use very little oil...I have had several Tacos, no oil burnage or loss, now, get me talking about the tricked 97 Saturn SW2 I had that burned a qt every 1000 miles from day one, and got worse after the warranty expired....

You being a mechanic has everything to do with this thread. A mechanic should understand the mechanics of an engine and how oil could be lost. A mechanic would check the compression in the engine, and check seals to see where the oil is disappearing from.
