I have the 2.7/Auto and used to drive a V8 Mustang. Do I notice a difference? Yes, but I still have no problem merging onto the freeway or keeping up with traffic.

Just got back from a trip to Ozarks carrying 1250 pounds of motorcycle, people and luggage. On some long steep hills between Springfield MO and the Infamous Branson, MO I was using 4th gear(manual tranny) at about 70 or so(3000 RPM) and the pedal was not more than half down to pull the hills, and on one hill I wanted to get around a semi while in the steepest part of the hill and I floored it and it actually gained speed. Not a lot of gain but still pretty impressive for a 4 popper IMO. Also if you are a real good rower of a manual gearbox, it can be quite responsive and surprise you with its pickup.

You should listen to what everybody who doesn't have a 4 banger says.

My 4 banger is fine.. I can get on the highway no problem.
But listen to what every 20 something who might have owned three vehicles in his life on here has to say first.

my dad has a 1995 3.4L v6 T100 and my 1997 2.7L Tacoma (both 5 speed) and i can kill him in a race. my truck is much faster. but when it comes to hauling when you drive the two you can tell he would win.

I hope that wasn't directed to me.

I am shopping for base models, and have driven both, and have decided to get an access 5 speed with a 4 popper. only because of a huge performance difference in my opinion, it felt like a different motor all together

As I said earlier for me the 2.7/auto combo has pletty of pep to it. I am sure the 5 speed is quicker, but you loose the conveinence of not having to row gears. If I want something for performance I will buy a sportscar.

Not directed at anyone in particular. The man asked about a good deal, And got nonsense/wisecrack answers. seems to be happening a lot.
