ScanGauge II or something else?

I used to have one of these in my Sportsmobile van:

It worked fine and I was thinking about getting another one but I wanted to see if people on here are using something similar. Whatever it is it has to have the code reader option incase I need to clear a CEL.

 

There are other options that others will be along to tout. However, I have the SCII in each vehicle, and find them both simple to use and quite useful, even if I don't have CELs.

 

The Scan Gauge II can be found cheaper. I had both the Scan Gauge and the Ultra Gauge. I went back to the Ultra Gauge. It is easier to configure the pages, access information and calibrate. Another option is the Torque app and a Bluetooth OBDII dongle, about $20 total and very easy to configure, the only downside is that you have to use a phone or cheap tablet and they run hot or die because of the drain on the battery. I wish someone made a 12volt powered 5-6" tablet that didn't have an internal battery. I run the Torque app and Bluetooth dongle in both 4Runners.

 

I had a scangauge II that I got to monitor my Ford diesel Sportsmobile van so I could watch the oil heat up to terminal levels. Moved it to the Tacoma when the van shit the bed, and within a year the scanguage also quit working. Just bought a bluetooth OBDII reader and the torque app for my droid, and it does everything the scangauge does and more for only about $30.

We should form an Asheville recovering Sportsmobile owner/now Tacoma owner support group. Tacomas work better....but they're harder to live in.

 

Haha! Yeah, I sold my 2001 4x4, 7.3 Powerstroke Sportsmobile to help finance my house and went back to a Tacoma. It much simpler to camp out of a Tacoma...

Anyway, I'll that out. But I want something to read codes.

Edit: I would need one that works with an Iphone.

 

Torque can read codes as well as clear them. I got this not too long ago myself. Do you have an old android phone? It'll still work without service. Just uses gps. I bought a cheap refurbished tablet that I'm currently using that I leave in the truck. Maybe consider getting a cheap android device like a used phone maybe? Would still be cheaper than a scanguage. I believe there's an app for the iPhone, but I think it's limited, and nowhere as fancy as torque from a pic I saw. But, if all else fails, return the products and get a scanguage. Worst case scenario, you're only out a few bucks, unless of course you can't return the android device if you get one... Just something to consider.

I use the Torque app, but it don't have accuracy when showing my fuel consumption. Is scangauge better in this point? It gets the info directly from ecu or make calculations using user inputted data, like engine displacement, fuel tank...?

 

I like my SG II. It's simple and looks clean. I got an ultra gauge for my mustang and it feels cheap and looks cheap. Still gets the job done though.

 

The Scan Gauge and Ultra Gauge both are accurate, but once the Ultra Gauge is calibrated, it is more accurate than the Scan Gauge by far. The only reason to by a Scan Gauge to me is if you want transmission temperatures. Otherwise the Ultra Gauge is cheaper and has better page setup, more gauges per page and auto scroll.

 

So do any of these readers read afr? I’m trying to watch them closely because I’m running the trd supercharger with the URD upgrade kit

 

@James_tburg it looks like it does I took a screen shot of guages now im wondering if it reads engine oil pressure couldn't find it on there page

@chirkin ok cool, I ended up buying an aem aft gauge and an ultra gauge, I just need to install a banjo bolt to include fuel pressure because I don’t think my truck came with a sensor for it

 

@James_tburg that's good to know about the oil pressure because I was gonna buy one hopeing it did oil pressure since I'm getting a rebuilt motor put in and dropping so much money I figured it would be worth it.
