Hey guys new here,im 46 own a hot rod shop.I have been a long time chevy fan and drive hot rods etc.etc.I worked as an ASE mech all through my twenties which was 90-99 in northen Cali.now live in GA. anyway i have always loved the Tacoma,s so i finally bought a clean 2011 trd pre runner with 40k on it,this past Dec 20th,2014.My question is.... we,{my wife and 11 and 15 y.o.} like to camp fish etc. the truck is 2 wd ,is that still fine for getting out off the trail a little? Nothing seriuos like mudding ,rock climbing etc.just lake visits, pulling a pop up,taking a few back roads etc. would like to hear from 2 wd owners, and what you may have put yours through.thanks and God Bless

There's some pics floating around of last spring ... we had flooding in south Florida where I lived.

had water up over the hood a couple times...dipped the drivers' side mirror into the drink on a couple of places...

you can climb through a lot, if you're mindful of what your truck can do and how it is built. (it helps that the air intake on a stock 08 reg cab is almost three feet off the ground for these times)

keep your head about you and you can drive through a lot

    EDITED to add pics

the shallow end of my parking lot was 'only' about a foot deep when i left for work

Lots of folks don't 'get' how to deal with water, and stalled or siezed, or whatever

That weekend did a LOVELY job of cleaning my undercarriage!

Even took a chance on filming a phone cam vid

about a mile past taking the movie, the road went down to the left sharply...that's where I first dipped the mirror in the water....you wanna talk about rolling up a manual crank window in a HURRY

then, getting back out onto congress ave, there was a 'low' half-block that was a culvert gathering spot for a housing development and a strip shopping center...went crawling through there and had a pucker factor 9 moment when the front end dipped and the waves came lapping up over the hood

popped back up the other side to the sidewalk with the water about 12 inches from my windshield washer sprayers

Satoshi, debadged, rear view mirror bracket, tail gate hose clamps, trimmed mud flaps.
Get some good A/T tires and be ready to air down a little if needed. Don't forget to carry something to air your tires back up.

For what you are describing, you will have no issues with 2wd. I use mine for similar (but still have the Duncraps, and will be getting Dynapros soon), and have never gotten myself stuck. Just gotta use the noggen.

Just stay away from mud and super soft sand if possible.

Get some good tires, lock the rear, find some dirt and enjoy life to its fullest.

With some decent tires you'll be VERY surprised where 2wd gets you. Just stay away from mud, snow, do NOT stop in soft sand and... AIR DOWN
