Is it best to have a retrofit for HIDs?

Hi everyone, I'm looking into getting HID headlights for my DCSB 15' tacoma but I want to do it right and make sure I'm not going to do this wrong or in a crappy way. I just want to know a few things, one of my friends just got HID bulbs put into his 04 tacoma to replace the stock bulbs. I've heard that not using a retrofit that's made specifically for HIDs can cause glare and scattered light. I want to keep the stock headlight housing design but I want to put HIDs in one. Does anyone know of a retrofit that looks like stock but is for HID bulbs? Please inform me on how all this works! Thanks!
