I run a full metal fabrication shop of about 40-45 people that specialize in rolling/forming sheet metal, mig/tig welding, and a small amount of machining. Owner of the company came to me at the beginning of the year and asked how can we expand our work load because we're to the point where we are starting to sub a large amount of work out to keep up with sales. I told him we need more fabricators and welders as well as better equipment. I was given the go ahead to remove all the old fabrication equipment that we no longer use, redo the entire 54,000 sq ft building layout to improve flow as well as order new equipment that'll improve our products as well as quality and speed. We currently have a 5x10 multicam plasma table, 60 ton mechanical press brake, 90 ton hydraulic press brake, multiple plate rollers, multiple saws, shear, 18'x60' over head traveling crane, 4 tig stations and 16 mig stations. Was given a $500,000 budget to get started! Just received a new saw that'll cut up to 13" dia round tube at a 45 deg angle, ordered a new 6'x12' high def plasma table, ordered a new 220ton hydraulic press brake with a 13' beam on it. Also getting a new plate roller, a new angle iron/tubing roller, end mill, and lathe. All kick ass things that'll let me keep making cooler and cooler prototypes for my little side projects too! We have two paint booths but I am hoping by next year one will go away and I get approval to get a powder coat booth. A man can dream, a man can dream.

The point to all this is what cool things have you been tasked to do at work that'll be noticed by everyone and makes you proud?

I'm not familiar with metal fabrication at this level. What is an example of what you produce?

I was given a pink slip, and tasked myself with starting my own business. 6 years in, best task I ever had.

Congrats on the fab shop upgrade.

Good deal. I did that for a few years working for my Dad. Commercial, Industrial, Residential. I ran heavy equipment as well as repair and maintenance. Did all the blue prints for all the dwellings as well. Definitely hard work.
