    Hello Forum,
I'm about to order a Hypertech Speedometer/Odometer Calibrator Part # 730107 for my '08 4.0 DCSB PreRunner. I found one on ebay for $178 (free shipping..

Fom what I've read, you input the:
    265/70r16: My OE tire size
    & then
285/70r17: My current tire size.My gears remain unchanged (3.73).

I originally went from 265/70r16 to 265/75r16 & the speedometer was accurate with 2 different GPS's that I tested with. Now it's the opposite. My speedometer is 2 to 3 miles slower than the actual speed I'm traveling at. I assume that you have to program the device BEFORE installing it behind your instrument cluster.

    My question is:
If I decide to change tire size and/or rear gears in the future will I have to remove the device from behind the cluster to do so? Or, is there a way that I can plug into it (maybe leaving a USB cable attached to it with access under the dash) so that I don't have to remove everything in order to re-program it?

    Thank you for your time

I don't have one... but have read that guys leave a USB cable running to the fuse box. That's my plan.

    OK. Cool. Thank you.

    Are you getting yours soon?

Did you re-gear or just changed the tire size like me?

I'll probably get it when I'm closer to wearing out the OEM Rugged Fails. At this point I'll just be changing the tire size. I'm planning to do a mod that disables the seat belt chime at the same time, when I have the dashboard apart.

Check out monoprice.com for the cable.

Just a thought, when you were setting up your software, did you choose your model Tacoma from the drop down menu? I fudged my install the first time and had to reconnect the USB to fix it. I believe Audi is the default. I did three checks with my GPS at 35, 55, and 85 mph. At 85 I'm displaying maybe one mph off and I blame the math conversion with the hardware, but it's so close that it's hardly noticeable.

See build link in signature or public profile.
I taped and zip tied the USB cord on mine and had it routed to the left change drawer.

Hey man. I opened the link you provided. I see that there are only 2 left. I'm about to buy one of them. Did you buy yours already? I don't want to take the last one at that price from you. You are the one that found it first.

I got my first 4x4 in 1972...haven't been without one! I still like Chrome!
Have you guys looked into changing the gear on the end of the speedometer cable at the transmission?
I know they have two with different number of teeth to correct the speedometer..

I didn't know that was even available for this truck. I had an '83 Crown Vic that I dropped a modified 5.8 into & I ran bigger tires also (not ghetto style, haha). I ran 275/60r15.

I think that every tooth on the Crown Vics speedo/odo gear represented 5mph difference. They were color coded & Ford had them available.

Is that the same for 2nd Gen Tacomas?

Don't worry about me go for it. I think it's just a tactic they use to get people to pull the trigger anyway.

The real reason I've been holding off is justifying to myself $200 to fix 2.5mph off around 20mph, and 5mph off around 60mph.

Eventually I'll fix it, just not a high priority for me.

I am also interested to know if you can just replace the speed sensor gear to fix this issue as well. I was able to do this with jeeps that I owned in the past.

I'm thinking of buying the same unit for my 5lugger and am hesitating as well due to the price, it's $189.20 on Amazon right now. I went from the car sized stock 215/70-15's(26.9") to 245/70-17's(30.5") and my speedo is off by 3mph at 30 and 7mph at 60. At highway speeds it's off by enough that I'm liable to get a ticket. Has anyone heard of other units that are available out there? I asked the same question weeks ago in the 5 lug forum and its been nothing but crickets thus far. There has to be a more affordable unit out there that does the job well.

Don't believe the speedometer gear change is an option, ie no speedometer cable. Speedo/Odometer is driven by a speed sensor that counts revolutions, and most people have reported a different error % on speedometer versus the odometer. Brand new, my (and most as reported by others) speedometer read 2-3 mph high compared to GPS, and that is common among many vehicles regardless of manufacturer. My odometer has less than 1% error when tires were new. Replacement oem-size LTX MS/2's read about 2% high. I adjusted my ScanGauge II to correct its odometer to spot on as I am primarily interested in accurate mpg. Tire wear will also affect speedo/odometer error as tires wear. I recalibrate the SG II every 15-20k miles. OEM 245/75-16 lost a full inch when replaced, and were NOT down to the wear bars. I would imagine the calibrator would require adjustment to correct for tire wear, and would also guess it will alter speedo versus odometer by the same %.

I didn't notice much change going from 245-75-16 Dunlops to 265-70-16 Michelins. I tried a 265-70-17 all terrains for a short time to wear them out to blast the rims. They were catching the mud guards so I removed them and went with 265-65-17 General A/T2. That was the biggest change and since it reads faster (GPS) I need a fix.

I have been running one for about five years. Hadn't thought to leave the cable attached for easy access in the future...Might have to plug it in next time I have the dash apart. Here is a pic of how mine is installed. I think it was worth the money!
