Tried a search & have made an appt for Weds at the dealer but am curious what you guys think this might be ????

    2013 4WD TRD OF V6 auto w/ 3500 miles.
A couple of days ago my truck started this strange noise that I just cannot pinpoint.
It is intermittent & has no pattern of happening.
The engine can be hot or cold.
It sounds like clacking...cards stuck in a wheel spoke or if you were spinning the "wheel of fortune".
I cannot hear it at idle but you give it gas the clacking gets more pronounced. It will happen in 1st & 2nd gear.
As the truck accellerates it goes away.
Its not the tick & isn't always present but today on a long trip with a few traffic lights or stop signs it would happen very pronounced coming from
either the engine or the driveline???
Most of the time the truck sounded fine & as said at idle in Park no noise.

I checked the oil & looked all around underneath & inside the engine compartment & cannot see anything.
The fan shroud seems secured ok.
Anybody have this sound or experience on what it might be?
I will have to try & replicate it for the service guys :(

Check anything like a hubcap/lugnut cover for the ol coin rattle prank? Or a rock ina tread, not sure of the occurance.

OK I have located the culprit. It looks like I have an exhaust leak at one of the flanges.
At cold start it was dripping water & could see exhaust fume seepage.marehase_77314565932c27359276c09cab1df8efee882578.jpg

Ok I went to the dealer and of course the truck didn't make the noise so they said I'm SOL until I can bring the truck in while it is making the noise.

I understand it has to get replicated.
They said the exhaust was normal, tested normal.
The tech went for a nice ride with me....
Of course this weekend the truck did it a bunch of times.

It happens when put into gear, either reverse or D.
Once you slowly accelerate it is like a popping noise.
It is worse at a cold start but also happens with a warm engine at times.
Very intermittent. Very frustrating. It doesn't sound right & didn't do it prior.

The truck has about 4k, 2013 TRD OF DC 4x4.
My 06 SR5 never had this or the driveline vibes  or the pulsing brake pedal from the hydralic booster (also intermittent).
    What the heck?

Any ideas of what this popping is ...the fan does it have a clutch or something??

The fan does indeed have a hydraulic clutch.

This link will show you how to check it: Http://www.howstuffinmycarworks.com/Fan_clutch.html

Same thing with my new Tacoma. At 3500 mi sound like a card in the spokes under the hood (although hard to hear outside while running) and kind of in the cab too...def hard to pinpoint. Its going to the dealer friday and will post once the prob is identified...not too happy, however. truck was paid in full! Simon's Mom, have you found the issue yet? Welcoming all relevant info. Thanks!

Ok my truck still does this in extreme cold weather.
It sounds like a slight popping or wheel of fortune wheel clacking.
It is not the intake going into the fender wheel well rattle.

The noise becomes more pronounced when giving slight gas, driving from a stop light up to 30 mph
    at idle very subtle.
Once warm it usually goes away depending on temps outside.
If I let the truck idle and warm up due to extreme cold (-10) I cannot really hear it.
BTW I am deaf in one ear, P4 from the Army so if I hear something it is a miracle lol
Since I was coming up to the end of warranty, I left with the dealer again overnight in sub zero temps.
The dealer of course says it is Normal,
they had two foremen & a tech diagnose. Should I worry about this??
    At least it is documented
