Well, the spring pics, for the most part I have seen posted, to me, do NOT show similar rust issues as the frames. When the springs are made - a min. steel chemistry is required to be able to harden the steels - so that helps with the quality of the steels. Once made, the steel must then be hardened and tempered to bring the final hardness within the acceptable range. Too hard and they crack, too soft and they are too weak/sag.

These breaking springs look to be incorrectly tempered - of the steel chemistry is off to the point that the hardening/tempering process is thrown off and the steel is too hard. IMO

I wonder if the hardness was purposely made on the high so 1 less leaf could be used.

Toyota just needs to put Dakars on everything from now on.

The exact same leaf is broke on mine. After one dealer telling me there was nothing they could do for me. I took it to another dealer that told me it was safe to drive and the leafs are on back order and would take about four weeks for them to get them. I did use safety wire to tie it so it will not work it's way into my tire. Dealer said my wire job was pretty good and they were going to leave it like that till the new leafs came in.

I agree. Park that puppy. I don't think it's safe to drive is good advice at all. I'm wondering if the three week out deal is because they are waiting for a big shipment for the recall. At this point were beyond clips. These springs are an epic fail.

i know your taco is at 2010 OP

Is this leaf issue affecting the 2012 and up model?

I have a 2013 and I do hear the clunking noise when im driving slow and all of a sudden come to a complete stop.

I had the driver side leaf break. It slid sideways and dented the shock.
I made a strap out of a large hose clamp to hold it in place till I could fix it.
At the very least wrap it with some gorilla tape if you keep driving it.
I replaced both leaf springs myself with new ones from General Spring.

Should your vehicles now or perhaps in the future get a spring TSB/recall save all your receipts as Toyota "might" reimburse something ....

OKAY it took about two weeks for the parts to come in, but the springs have been replaced. new bushings and U-bolts. rides smooth.

Due to manufacturing tolerances, they also put it up on the alignment bed, it was OK.

$0.00

but i am very disappointed that they would not replace the shocks. i understand the recall does not include the shock absorbers, HOWEVER, my situation is FAILURE, and my leaf spring is CRACKED IN HALF. that means that one shock has taken an excess beating for a long time.

as i mentioned above, you can see how the rubber bump stop has hit the frame many times (clean spot) and the other side is not like that.

if the shock was leaking i'd have a better argument. these shocks are about $100 each and i was hoping for new ones.
