Last year when it snowed and i was working the manuel clutch (trying not to spin the tires) there was a burning smell or like something was just hot.

I was in 4x4 had the clutch half way pressed in and the tires didn't spin. It was in reverse.

Why would it be getting hot?

As you feather the clutch like you were doing that is creating the clutch plate to slip against the flywheel. With it slipping that causes extreme heat from friction. This could have been just the way you were using it at the time and or its nearly time for a clutch replacement. Hope that helps your understanding...

Oh! Also with it in 4x4 that puts much more drag we'll call it on your clutch creating even more of a slipping occurrence.
