Manual transmission grind in 3rd gear

    I recently bought my son a 2005 Tacoma 4x4. It has about 140,000 miles. After he put about 10,000 miles on it this grind has developed. When shifting gears it will slightly grind going into 3rd and only 3rd. It also seems to be consistant only when it is cold. I drove it a couple of times and tried to figure out if it was the operator. I quick shifted, slow shifted, shifted without the clutch and just about anything I could think of to check it out. The only way I found to avoid the grind was to shift into 3rd very slowly. I have changed the fluid to AMSOIL and nothing changed. Any ideas?

    sounds like syncros are going on 3rd.

    Not to point fingers, but sounds like your son grinded the gears/wore out the syncros... since it happened after it was given to him. A rebuild may be in your future. You could try MT90 from Redline, which can sometimes fix gear clunks/grinds, but no guarantee it'll do anything better than the Amsoil you put in it.

    I am assuming this is a 6 speed. Both 3rd and 5th gears on these trucks have the problem of going into those gears with a little difficulty. Usually it is a clunk. 3rd is the worst. The problem is poor/weak synchronizers from the factory. If 3rd is grinding then the synchronizer is most likely gone or very close to it.
    I never (very rarely) use 3rd or 5th. I go from 2nd to 4th and 4th to 6th. These trucks need slower shifting than normal. The only fix would be to have the synchronizers replaced (transmission rebuild).

    If you continue to use it and grinding it you could lose the transmission. So either do not use 3rd or shift very slowly.

    Thanks for the info. The synchro's is what I was afraid of. And yes this is a 6 speed tranny.

    FWIW, Toy has dropped the dual GL-4 or GL-5 use in both the 5-speed and 6-speed manual transmissions. In the newer trucks is
    $29 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)
    75w-90 GL-4 only. Saw this in the owner's manual on my '14 6-speed. I suspect this may also apply to older trucks as well.
