My 2000 isn't a TRD, and has no rear locker. My (now sold) FJ had a rear locker and I found it very handy when off road (Badlands).

For the most part I plan to use my Tacoma hunting, fishing, camping, none of which will necessitate a rear locker, but if I were to get into more serious off roading in the future with the Taco - can a rear locker be added to my truck? Difficulty of adding it? Approximate cost of adding a rear locker?

I'm trying to get an idea if this is something I should save for down the road, since I just got the truck I'm not planning many mods for awhile, but thought I'd ask if it could be a future project.

Apologies in advance for what may be something most people know, and thanks for the information!

I added front and rear lockers to my truck.
I paid a lot for them, went with ARB lockers and had a shop do the install because I have no clue on how to do that type of work hahahah

Yea - I'm in the same boat in terms of that type of wrenching. I was on the ARB site, doing some reading about air lockers as well.

Ball park figure if you don't mind of what it all cost?

I wouldn't mind throwing in a rear locker someday down the road...
    Just curious

    From most expensive to least:

e-locker - needs new housing as well as new 3rd member
    ARB - locker + compressor + switches + actuators
    Detroit automatic locker
    Detroit TruTrac (gear-driven LSD )
    PowerTrax

I've had the middle three with good success, and currently have the TruTrac. If I were in your position, that would be my choice.

The only price I have is of the complete install of these parts.

    - front and rear ARB lockers
    - ARB compressor
    - front and rear 4.88 gears
    - install kits for the gears
    - camburg uca
    -255/85-16 km2's
    Came out around $8,700

Saved two years of tax returns and bonus checks from work to have that done.

I had the TruTrac installed (LSD unit plus labor) for around $750. I saved some money by removing the differential myself, and taking it down to the gear shop.

That's in a price range I could deal with. I was reading some information here about the function (assuming this is the same). Sounds like a good setup for what I'm looking for without breaking the bank.

Rick - From what I'm reading, it looks like the TruTrac can be installed up front as well - did you do both front and rear, or just the rear?

The rear is the most useful place for a locker, as the primary application is climbing uneven surfaces (as your weight shifts to the back tires when climbing) or anywhere 2 or more tires aren't touching the ground. Do the rear first, if your budget is limited... add the front if you ever find the rear isn't enough.
