Whistle after I change the air filter?

    I'm new here and definitely not the most mechanically inclined but I've always done the basic oil change/filter change kind of repair on my other vehicles including a Dodge Ram 1500 and a Corrolla and have never had any problems. I recently bought a 2012 Tacoma PreRunner used from a dealer and decided I'd replace the air filter and the cabin filter since I didn't know what shape they were in from the previous owner. Turns out, they were both pretty new looking but oh well... I bought an
    $61 AEM 28-20281 Dryflow Air Filter, Red
    AEM 28-20281 Dryflow Air filter to replace the stock one. I dropped it in and snapped the retaining clips back in but when I started the truck I heard a somewhat high pitched whistle almost like a vacuum cleaner above the normal engine noise. After a few seconds it sounded like the air filter kind of settled or "thunked" into place and the noise went away. The next time I started the truck, the same thing, high pitch whistle and then the filter sounds like it settles in place and the whistle goes away. I've never noticed this with any of the other vehicles I've owned. I've heard of replacement air intakes whistling, but this was just a drop in air filter. Is this normal or did I miss something somehow?

    It sounds like the noise you hear is the the smog pump cycling. The aftermarket filter probably has more flow which infortunatly means more noise. (And less filtering ability but that's another thread). My truck has an aftermarket exhaust and I started to hear a similar noise from the exhaust end of the truck when I put it on. Unless someone has a different idea I wouldnt worry about it.

    I have an AFE dryflo and never had any noise or issues. However....I removed my 'carbon' thing (not sure if the newer trucks still have those or not).

    The best thing you can do, is take the filter out and put it back in - double checking the rubber areas and make sure its seated properly.

    It got dark on me and chilly so I might try that tomorrow.

    Thanks for the replies. Apparently I didn't have it seated well, I took it completely out, put it back in, and no whistle now.

    I retract my earlier statement. I changed the oil today and when I started the truck after the oil change the whistle and "thunk" were back.
