If it was a 6-cyl, it was 2001 or later. And if it was a 2001-2008 6-cyl (or a 4-cylinder with the cold weather package) it had a limited slip rear end which helps dramatically. The 2001-2004 "VDC" 6-Cylinders and the 2005+ got VTD too, which was a 45F:55R torque split under normal conditions that could vary to 50:50.

    I've had a 97 (4-cyl standard), 2004, and 2008 Outback (both H6s). My parents have a '98, '01, and '04 (all four cylinders) right now. They're fantastic.

Most fun Outbacks ever made, though, were these: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5xKh70o0F4

A friend had one--it's a WRX drivetrain tuned for a little more power thrown into an Outback. I still want one some day.

Have had both. For us mall-crawlers and light off-road and snow good tires works just fine with LSD 2-wheel. Get in a serious snowstorm and I ask my wife to use her FWD Accord. Icy or serious mud nothing beats 4x4. But now that I think about it the only time I've ever been stuck was with a 4x4 in the sand in Saudi Arabia. The Saudi that stopped to pull me out kept saying something in Arabic and later I found out he was saying "why drive off road, why drive off road"? The sand there is like silica and you needed a tank to get out of it.

Bet you wouldn't get stuck here either in a 4X2.

Would your truck be more capable if it was 4wd?

    i wasted my money on a 4wd:mad:

But in all seriousness i had a preener that i did some decently rough trails in but always took a buddy to get me out if i got stuck.

Seems like you had a ton of fun though a bunch of people probably don't even take there 4x4s in the dirt at all. Look around when driving and you will know who they are.

4x4 is nice when you live in an environment with hilly terrain with snow or loose terrain... safer, convenient, less drama just trying to do what you need to get done...

You need to try some mud, make sure you have a friend with a 4X4 come with you.
