When I start my 2000 tacoma with 3.4l it starts quietly but when its cold and I turn the wheel it makes a loud squeal that lasts for less than a second. It won't do it when its ran for awhile or while driving but just for a moment when the engine has sat a little while. I figure it has to do with my power steering belt.... can y'all tell me how to tighten that rascal???

I just had a shop replace the timing belt, water pump, and all the drive belts and also put a new a/c bearing on also.... all new drive belts came with the kit I so I am wondering if all I need to do is a simple tighten so my squeal goes away

Check the belts for proper deflection. There should be between 1/4 and 1/2 inch of movement when you push on the belt between pulleys. If there's more than that it's too loose and needs to be tightened up.

It's only when you turn, right after turning the truck on? My truck does that, and it's got to do with my crappy reman power steering pump. Does the pump make any groaning noises when you just start the truck?

the truck did groan and whine real bad but I found I had a bad bearing on my a/c so switched that out and after a timing belt kit the truck is really quiet on startup.... unless I turn the wheel a bit shortly after starting then the real quick and loud squeal

You have the 3.4L which has 3 separate accessory belts.

You have to find out which belt is loose. Inspect all of your pulleys also and make sure they are all 'dirt' and 'oil free'

In an open area of the belt, grab the edges with your finger & thumb. Twist the belt. You shouldn't be able to twist it past 'perpendicular'.

Thanks for the link, I was just thinking I should change mine. Do you guys know if worn belts would cause a chirp at idle.
