1st gear to 2nd gear shift problem

So every time I shift from 1st to 2nd going up any sort of hill especially in the morning I get a stall or lunge action out of the truck. It is almost like the pistons are missing or the gas is not getting into the injectors. I was going to ask my service writer but figured I would get more attention here.

Also, my buddy has a 1989 4 runner stick that does the exact same thing from 1st to 2nd.

What do you think?

 

When was your last tune up , plugs , wires , throttle body cleaning etc etc .

I have not had the plugs replaced as they keep telling me that I have to wait until 100k miles. I have 100K miles so it might be good to do. After reading through your link that would take me a month.

I will either call my friend or head to the dealer.

Make sure your foot is entirely off the clutch when you push the gas in 2nd gear. Otherwise the ECU aggressively pulls throttle, presumably trying to save the clutch. The switch that matters trips at the very top of the pedal travel, and just having it a tiny bit depressed will trip it. Yep, almost feels like the motor goes dead for a second or two.

Yes it's weird. Not sure why, but the 4.0 stick doesn't do it like the 2.7s.

 

I would give the engine a good tune up with fresh spark plugs , fuel filter etc etc and making sure the throttle body and mass air flow sensor are both cleaned when they replace the plugs .

Mine felt like shit in the low gears, I later found out that my 175,000mi (at the time) engine had only had the plugs changed once and that one of them was coming out and I was loosing compression. Moral of the story, check the simple stuff, it felt like i had no low RPM torque and that is basically all these motors have going for them.
