Can anyone tell me if all the TPMS's (Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensors) are the same? My son has an 06 standard cab, 4 cyl, 5 lug Tacoma. His TPMS light stays on in his truck and it's driving him crazy. I may have the opportunity to purchase 4 like new TPMS sensors from a 2013. Is there a difference electronically between 2006 and 2013? Are the sensors used on 5 lug vehicles different than the sensors used on 6 lug wheels?

    TIA,
    Frank

Thanks for the thought OZ-T but yes, his spare is fine and new not long ago. Dealer checked it out and found one sensor to be bad but they weren't sure which one without spending more time on it which I didn't have the I was there. I can buy a whole set for less than what the dealer wants for just one. I just want to be sure the ones I buy are compatible. Thank you again.

There IS a difference between steel vs alloy sensors, but I can't imagine there is a difference between 5 and 6 lug steel wheels. When did they start putting TPMS in Tacomas? I always thought it was 2008.

Does the spare have tpms too? Seems silly since the flat one that is replaced will continue to throw the warning.

Pretty sure the spare on my Pro doesn't have one....Toyota uses a P tire for the spare and LT's on the truck. The spread on the pressures is enough that it would kick things off all the time.

Ah ok. Was it 2008 that they became mandatory on all vehicles then?

just remember that they changed the TPMS system after it came out.

Originally there were 5 sensors (one for spare as well), but somewhere around 2009/2010 they changed it to only use four sensors and exclude the spare.

it will not work. the 2013 is a different sensor than the 2006. it throws out a different mhz and the computer wont read it and its a different part #. if you went to a local tire shop the should be able to get you a ready sensor or easy sensor and program it to work with the 06. i sell these all the time as im the owner of a tire and wheel shop. shouldnt be looking at much more than 60-70 bucks to replace it.

The sensor wont work just by replacing them, they need to be programmed to the computer. That being said, any working sensor can be programmed to your computer, the only issue will be fitment.

I think that should say that "any working sensor that is meant for the correct year, make, and model can be reprogrammed."

TPMS have a "life" expectancy and they do go bad, the internal battery dies, etc. These should be replaced with a suitable and verified sensor so the system works properly, not just some random one bought because it was $20 at Autozone.

I have 2014 sensors programmed to my 2010 right now. I had 2012 limited sensors programmed to the computer before that. Then before that, 07 sport. So you see, as long as you program the sensor to the computer, they will work regardless of what year and type that they are.

these sensors your reprograming are they aftermarket or are they oe sensors? i have a tool for scaning an oe sensor then copying it to a aftermarket one but as far as i know the oe sensors are reprogramable.
