I’m thinking about 40 gallons in red cans. (two 5 gallon cans and two 15 gallon boat cans)

Thinking of buying 55 gallons barrel with crank pump. Add stabilizer and rotate fuel in spring and late fall.

Reason is “better save then sorry”. I remember long lines and fights over gas when 2 years ago storm came through in the winter months.

I would look at a stand alone elevated tank away from the house if you're looking at storing that much. A lot happens in a garage. Sure would hate to light of that bomb by mistake.

I know guys who store way more than that. Look at some of the "preppers" websites and you should find plenty of ideas for storing fuel and how to do it safely.

As BYBO said any more than 5-10 gallons and i would look at somewhere not attached to the house personally.

But just have a good rotation setup and i wouldnt see nay problem with doing something like this.

    How about 0 ?

Your garage is not designed to store fuel... and fumes ignite easily in closed areas... ignite from water heater, car starting, sparks, it is insane to put a bomb next to the place you live. Another issue is stabilizing fuel... gasoline goes bad when it sits around for any length of time... Ethanol in gas make it last even less.

Man, and I thought I was "prepared."

That is a lot of gasoline to pour and pump by hand twice a year.

I find it kind of a pain in the *ss just to rotate my 15 gallons of gas that I keep in NATO cans in the back of my truck, and I only do that annually.

More than three times as much gas, twice a year?

Yeah, I just keep 2 5 gal cans in the garage but farmers do it all the time. Certainly not in an attached garage or a basement though. You can go to tractor supply and get a fuel transfer cell. I just saw one yesterday that was 50 gal and pretty cheap, $400 or so? You'd have to add a pump, hose and nozzle, but you can probably get all that for less than $100 if you are willing to pump manually. The big problem is getting it filled. Farmers get fuel delivered with no road taxes, but it's brought to them. If you are filling a metal fuel cell in your truck it needs to be grounded and the major problem will be unloading that cell which will likely be in the range of 5 or 600lbs. Or you can fill it with 5 gal cans I guess.

Those red jerry cans take a long time to burn . They also take a long time to extinguish when you have to put the fire out .Be prepared to use a bunch of fire extinguishers . Even the foam used on the fire truck for aviated fuel has a rough time once the raw fuel begins running . Been there many times as a firefighter .
