I have a 2000 sr5 Xtracab tacoma ... 5 speed 4x4 w/ v6 and tonight when I went to park the pull handle had no pressure and the brake wouldn't set. He last few weeks i have had to push the handle a few extra times to get the light to stay off but something happened tonight. I didn't hear a snap or noise it just stopped working.... What am I looking at as far as repairs and is there any diy threads with pictures to walk me through the fun that lies ahead?

I went home and pulled the brake and it worked again... It had a little slack at the end but I am able to push it to make enough contact with the button to turn the brake light off on the instrument panel.... So something is binding maybe???

Look at the mechanism for the parking brake cable. It is located on the drivers side, directly below the drivers door, mounted to the inside of the frame rail. It looks like this:

Make sure the cable has tension on both sides of the arm - if not, adjust using the two nuts on the threaded cable end. Also check the arm for easy of movement, if it is rusted or bound up in any way, lubricate the hinge pin.

The slide on the parking brake handle needs to be greased as well, as that can create a sticking point. If all those appear to be in good order, you'll have to start looking at the brake mechanism in the rear brake drums.

Tri Flo Teflon lube, or pull the pin out and grease it with whatever.

When my parking brake did not work I found that it was the bell cranks on the outside of the drums that were binding instead of the pivots mentioned in the earlier posts.
