So ive been battling this issue for the past 3 months now. I replaces my shoes back in november and then i noticed after a few days that the rear brakes were dragging, so i popped off the drums readjusted them and went on my way, noticed after a few weeks that they were dragging again, so i went in replaced all the springs and hardware and made sure everything was good. now it happened again after a few weeks. So i went to the store and got new drums and shoes and replaced them and they were really good until two days ago. they are dragging again and i cant figure out why.

What do i need to do to make my rear brakes stop over adjusting and just act normal again?

Sounds like the adjuster mechanism isn't working right. Possible installation problem or incompatible parts.

Other than that (until they start dragging), do the rears work pretty well? Does the parking brake hold the rig on a slight uphill?

yeah parking brake works when its all adjusted right and then as time goes on depending on how much im backing up they over adjust and end up dragging.

DO i need to bleed the brakes when im done?

you sure you don't have issues with the e-brake lever? sometimes they get rusty and don't release when the cable releases.

I find it hard to believe the adjuster is over doing it because it can only move as far as the pads do so it should not ever be able to over tighten itself unless something in the mechanism is not moving freely.

did you take it all apart and lube and grease everything where needed?

And now that I have the drums off I notice that when I pull the parking brake with the drum off it adjusts the tensioner. Is that supposed to happen?

Never mind. If I hold the drum on tight and pull the parking brake I don't hear hear it adjusting.

it has been a looooong time but im sure the adjuster is ONLY supposed to adjust when the truck is rolling backwards not forward so confirm you don't have it on backwards

often a way to set the adjustment is just to back up hitting the brakes a few times and it sets itself to the drum

i dont see how i could have it on backwards, i did one side at a time. but i realized the only reason it adjusted when i pulled the ebrake is because i didnt have the drum on and the shoes were spreading out all the way.

but i just readjusted the brakes and actually bleed the rear brakes real quick this time so ill see if that helps

You don't mention the rear wheel cylinders. Any chance they are hanging? I assume that the boots are dry, meaning you didn't replace them, but it doesn't mean the bore is clean and the piston moving freely..........

You don't have to replace them to determine if they need replacing, just pull them apart and check the insides. You will have to refill/bleed after that of course.

disconnect the brake line hose to the rear brake lines, if the back wheels can then turn free, then your brake line has gone bad and is holding pressure. its swells on the inside until the hole closes so pressure forces its way in but when you release the brake the pressure is held by the hose. its a common thing to happen on very old brake lines.

if thw wheels still wont release then its something with the brakes or the brake calipers
