What is used these days to recalibrate the speedometer for a larger tire on a 96 Tacoma? Superlift no longer makes the Tru-speed, the JET recalibrator only works on model years 98-up and programmers dont work on Toyotas. Anyone have a solution for a Gen 1? Is a 96 a gear driven speedo? All of the posts ive come across while doing a search are post-98. I cant seem to find an answer for the 95.5-97 trucks. Please help

It's a gear driven speedo, and cable driven. You will have to find a gear with the appropriate number of teeth for your tire size and gear ratio.

It's not too hard to swap it.

You have to get them from Toyota. Not sure which one you need because I don't know your gear ratio or tire size, or what your original gear ration and tire size were.

I did a ton of googling when I was trying to correct mine. Somewhere out there is a list of most of the part numbers on one of the chat boards, but I can't remember where I found it.

Have any of you heard of someone retrofitting something more easily adjustable to these trucks? I wouldn't mind doing that.

I just changed the gear in my 01 not long ago because I went with 4.88's. It was super easy. I did it in 15 mins or so. I found the majority of the info on what gear to use on TTORA.

Here are a couple threads that helped me, I don't know if they'll do you any good or not but maybe they'll at least get you headed in the right direction.

A 2001 you could have used an electronic recalibrator. They are available for 1999-04

So where is the gear located on a standard auto trans, cable driven speedo, 2wd 96? The threads above are talking about electronic trannys and 4wd transfer cases, neither one I have on my truck..

I'm not positive, but check on the passenger side rear right were the driveshaft connects. It is held in place with one bolt. Once removed you should be able to pull the assembly out.
