I just turned over 100K and I know that the tacomas already make a valve tap noise, but mine is extremely loud. I took it to toyota and they said that it was normal. Well it wasn't that loud a week ago. And my truck is also running at higher rpms than usual. It revs at about 2500 rpms at 70mph when it was only at 1500 rpms a week ago. Has anyone else experienced this and what was the outcome. Ive already taken it to toyota so they were no help. Any advice or help would be great.

    Yep.
Mine has gotten noticeably louder since 50k, I'm at 125k now. No changes in oil burn, RPM, MPG...

It's just really annoying. People are always asking me if my engine is messed up :(
Oh, and you're probably going to get the "it's normal" response 1000x... unfortunately, it is.

I still have about 1000 miles left on my warranty but I have to have my truck for work. And they are always trying to put me in the smallest car possible. I dont want the warranty to expire and come to find out that its something that needs to be fixed.

I'm at 144k on an 06 with that same noise, I have thought about adjusting the valves but everyone I've talked to said its no use. I haven't noticed any change in anything since I noticed it 40 or 50k ago.....

There is no adjustment ( as in a screw with a locking nut etc... ). There are buckets that fit over the valve spring in different thickness'. You have to measure the valve lash and then get the appropriate thickness bucket and install them. Yes it is a big pain in the ass.

Toyota has used this system for a very long time.

That's what I meant but I didn't want to get into all that.

Are you sure? This sounds more like a torque converter problem if so...

Tapping noise could also be an exhaust leak up by the manifolds.

I haul a trailer everyday with anywhere from 500 to 3000 pounds and it pulls it no problem.

Dont mean to beat a dead horse with a stick :deadhorse: but has anyone tryed STP oil treatment on the 4.0l?
I have a Nissan with the same kind of bucket over valve thing and I used that stuff and it quieted down a lot.
