Hey guys, I just got the grey TRD skidplate and wanted to paint it black. Anyone ever done it? I am wondering:

What type of paint would look best flat or gloss?
    What brand or type?
Ive seen some people use bedliner black spray, would this work ok?

    Thanks

It's metal, so use anything you want. It already has paint on it, so no need to worry about primer.

Powdercoat will last alot longer than paint and be more resistant to scratches.

    Yes
I used satin black on mine, came out fine. While you have it off you can mod it to fit a little tighter to the bumper, looks a lot better than that huge gap.

So did that plate replace the factory front plate?
I have the two piece factory plate, told the dealer I wanted what you have, he stated you don't need it, truck comes with a front skid plate.
Nine does not wrap up to the bumper.
Did you leave the rear plate on?

    Yes
The TRD plate goes over the factor plate. It's really just a cosmetic piece, it's just thin aluminum. Yes, the rear plate is on also for a total of three. I got mine to fit up to the bumper with a bit of modding. First is to lose those aluminum spacers. Then had to cut some metal from the brackets like this:

Then trim of the tabs on the factory plate:

It's a tight fit around the tow hook and you need to bend it a little to it's new home but it works.

Yes, the ones I have looked at are just thin aluminum, would not take much of a hit.
I have been looking at some of the after market ones.
At this time I don't do very much off road driving, so hard to justify some big heavy plates.

Plastidip is your friend. It's easy to apply (just spray it on) and doesn't chip the way regular paint can. Plus, if you decide you don't like it, simply grab a corner and peal it all off in a single sheet and your finish underneath is exactly how it was before you painted. It's a rubberized coating so it's durable too. I dipped mine along with a lot of chrome trim pieces on other vehicles in the past and they've lasted for years. Here's mine that I sprayed with Plastidip w/o any prep or extra work. Just spray a few coats on and call it a day.

Thanks guys. Painted it Rustoleum flat black and it turned out great. Texture/color/shine looks just like the bumper. Thanks.

I used DupliColor Bed Armor in a spray and it worked really well. it gave it the ruff texture that I was looking. I used a DupliColor Lacquer Gloss to give it a wet dark shiny look after it dried.

LUSETACO, your install looks great! I see so many of those hanging down and I always thought that they look like heck, especially fitting poorly and being light colored. Your mod makes it look more like it belongs on there.

I like the Rustoleum compared to the Krylon in flat black. Thats what I used on mine. The Krylon I got later to finish the frame rails seemed wet and prone to runs, where the Rustoleum covered well, dried fast, and looked great.

I just used the high heat paint because I already had some where I repainted my gas grill. It has heald up good on both the skid plate and my gas grill!
