I'm looking into buying a used one and just trying to find out what a current owner thinks of them?

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
I would suggest looking here http://www.polarisatvforums.com/

I have read hit or miss stories on all Polaris quads while researching my brother-in-laws 500 sportsman and coworkers 500. It seems Polaris has wiring issues. They tend to break to do poor routing on the frame. Maybe that's been adressed by now. :notsure:

My BIL's cv boot just ripped but I guess that might be considered normal wear. It's an 06. He has had intermittent problems with the EFI system. Everything seems to point to a broke wire that I cannot locate.

What year??? I had an older one which was a pile but the newer ones are really good bikes as long as it was taken care of... Check out the brute force as well those are bullet proof bikes for the price, I bought mine new last year 750 fuel injected for $6900 out of the crate. Good Luck

The one I was looking at was a 2002 with 450 miles on it. It looks new.

Thats the same year model I had... I bought mine after it had been ridden hard though. Should be a good deal I rode the hell out of it and the worst thing that happened was the clutch locked up about 5 times and axles broke all the time (28" outlaws) oh yeah and the plug on the back of the speedo is the brain, mine went out about 25 miles down a back woods trail and I lost everything and had to be towed back... As I said before it sounds like it was taken care of so you should be alright.

My dad has a 2001 Sportsman 500 6x6 and its pretty hammered; it doesn't run anymore. This thing was the biggest pain in the ass to maintain. The clutch for the automatic transmission would get very hot and make a lot of noise. We did beat the shit out of it though :) My uncle however had a 700 v-twin and it was a beast. He never had a problem with it.

Thanks for the info guys. Yeah its 700 twin and its owned by an older guy who used it just to drive around his property. So I don't think it was ridden to hard and with only 450 miles how bad could it be for less than half the price of a new one.

How many miles do you have on yours? This one I just picked up only has 450 which seems low. I just put a new battery in it and runs great.

I have an 02. Issues so far are cv boots rip easy and destroy cv joints. And recently no spark. Turns out ignition system is crap made by ducati. Bought an entire retrofit kit for 500$ replaces entire ignition system.

I have a 97 sportsman 500 and my dad has a 13 sportsman 800. Mine will go places my dads wont even think of. Ive had to pull him out 3 times and I went right behind him after he got stuck. the only think ive replaced is the Carb, belt, and starter. Have to replace the front cv boots as they ripped this past weekend playing around. But it is still like brand new, just needs a carb adjustment as it hasn't been done completely.

Sold mine last year. Put in a new battery and new CV boots (brother tore them a week before I was going to list it), looked and ran brand new. It was an 07 with a couple hundred miles. Think I asked $4k and took $3.5k the next day, if I remember correctly. It was just taking up space for me.
