Just changed all the fluids yesterday, frt & rr diff, trans fluid and tcase. Used 75w90 mobil syn. Now I have a bad hmmmm like I just put on some serious nobby tires. Checked all the fluids this morning and all just started to dribble out the fill hole, so I assume it's at the right amount. Trans fluid is just a hair below the top notch on the full mark. And no I didn't use 75w90 in the trans either lol, used Toyota lV. Is my taco saying I don't like mobil and should I try something different. Just not sure which direction I should go now. Any advise? Thanks. Oh its a 2012 4cyl auto 4x4.

Looks like you have an A/T, you should be using ATF/WS, not ATF/IV.

Edit, Sorry, didn't notice it was the four speed auto, type IV is correct.

No he did it right. The 4 cyl has the old A340 transmission that still needs T-IV.

I never heard any odd hums with Mobil 1 gear oil in my 2009

my understanding is toyota technically calls for 75w-85 front and rear diff on 4x4. at least thats what my book says w v6, i think 4 is the same, double check. some of the info on TW was wrong. i ordered redline, have yet to install.

That's what I had read too. But i guess it was just a coincidence that it started making the noise after I changed all the fluids? Just plain weird I suppose, go figure...

    Yes.

I hate it when stuff like that happens, as I feel like I did something wrong.

And I do enough wrong on my own

And I sure wouldn't fret over the 75/85 vs 75/90 spec. difference. Not all engineers, automotive or otherwise, are geniuses when it comes to real world application.

Waste of perfectly good off the shelf lubricant to move to a boutique lubricant ?

When someone can prove to me with independent lab testing that there is a reward here (for enough of a health of my vehicles to cost ratio) I'll consider a move like that.

So far, no dice. Not just Amsoil, but any of the others.

I've run Royal Purple, Redline, Mobil 1, and other oils/lubes in my little 7200 RPM 5 speed car with 4:10 gears and race rubber. As have my peers. The final verdict via lab testing and antidotal 'feel' was actually Ford Motorcraft XT-M5-QS in the 5 speed, Mobil 1 in the motor and differential.

Yes that was a rash decision only because I had some amsoil already in the garage. Not going to replace perfectly good lube at this point. Guess I'll wait for the front axles to fall off or what ever happens when the needle thingy mo Bob goes out.. just sucks at thus point. Thanks for the info though.

You can drive it for a pretty long time with the noisy needle bearing. I probably have 10 K on since I started hearing it. Just keep an eye on your front diff fluid, and of course pay attention if the noise starts to change. I just changed fluid at 50 K (last time was 30 K) and the magnet had some sludge on it, but no flakes of metal. I don't mind spending $20 on lube once in awhile to keep an eye on this issue. I already picked up the bearing puller from another member and I'll get the ECGS bushing before too long. When I'm ready to do the work I'll pony up and buy a new CV at Auto Zone for $80 or whatever and keep the old one as a spare.
