I have been wanting to build a bed rack for a while and really liked Box Rocket design, so a took a few things from his. Mine needed to be different and I would use it for mainly hunting. I wanted a small around the top and expanded metal in the bottom. I needed it to be able to sit above some boxes I always carry and be able to fit two of these boxes in the bed of a double cab with a toolbox. Since I didn't want to take the box out of the bed every time I needed to open it and get something out, I wanted the bed rack to be able to hinge. To be able to hinge, I needed something to hold it open also. I found some lift gate supports off an suv in the length I wanted and attached them. Just used some simple hitch pins to hold the rack down.

Let me know what you think.

Interesting lift feature. What's the rating on those struts? Would they be able to hoist the rack with gear in it?

Just a bunch of old crap
This rack is SICK. Looks solid as hell, and I love the tilt feature. It rests back down on a very solid rail, too, so it's not a weakness in any way. I love the square tubing look, too. Well done!

I'm not real sure. I know they were for a Jeep grand Cherokee lift gate. They lift the rack itself with ease and you have to put a little muscle in pulling it back down.

I know its been a while, but yes they will hoist the rack with gear in it. I had at least 100 lbs on the rack and it lifted with ease.
