The same shit everyone else has.
Im getting ready to do the next round of routine maintenance to my truck - changing the gear oil in the front and rear differential, the transfer case, and the manual transmission.

I found all the little DIY's and stickies on here, they all have helped me out a lot with information, but I still have a few questions.

First off, here is the list of everything I came up with -

    - First question

Does anyone have the part numbers to all the fill and drain plugs. I want to order/replace each one as more of a precaution (possible damaged plugs) than anything else. Ive seen some of te horror stories people have posted about stripped/damaged plugs. I am the second owner of my truck and I dont exactly know 100% what the previous owner/dealership did to it. Id just feel better having new, non stripped plugs to reinstall.

    - Second question

Does anyone have the part numbers for both of the crush washers on transmission?

    - Third question

I've typically had pretty good luck running Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil in the past in my VWs. I know the Mobil 70w-90 is a GL5 gear oil, which should be fine for the front and rear differential, along with the transfer case, correct?

    - Fourth question

The transmission calls for a GL4 gear oil. Redline MT90 seems to be a good option. Does anyone have any objections or suggestions.

    Thanks

I just go to the dealer and tell them what fill/drain plugs I need and the gaskets.

They have a nice diagram they can show u so u both agree on the part#

Make sure you remove the fill plug before the drain plug,,,

If you drain and can't get the fill plug out your screwed

Knock on wood but I haven't changed the washers on this truck or my last.

I used Redline synthetic oil for all the running gear. The transmission did seem to be a little smoother after.

Only thing I would add is to have a good pump and some oil to fill everything back up, it helps a lot.

I used Redline MT-90. It's good stuff! My gears were noticeably smoother but then again I had 155,000 on factory tranny fluid.

    Thanks for the info guys.

I pulled the trigger on 2 quarts of Redline MT90 for the transmission so far. I need to order all the gaskets and plugs once I get all the parts numbers sorted.

Also, Ive updated the list with some more part numbers. So far, I have everything sorted but the gaskets and plugs for the transmission.

good to hear somebody actually still cares about this stuff.

im also in the class of people who dont replace sealing washers and no leaks if you care to know.

    gear oil is expensive enough!

Maybe a dumb question, but from what I'm seeing, the front diff and tcase use 75w90; the transmission and rear axle call for 70w90. They all vary in capacities, but the sum total is just under 2 gallons. Would it be a problem to just run 70w90 or 75w90 in all four components, so as to just be able to buy 2 gallons of the same gear oil? Unless I'm mistaking, the two oils are pretty much exactly the same except one is slightly thinner when cold. I live in the southeast, so extreme cold temperatures are not something I have to worry with.

Thanks Ken. Mine is a 2006 with the rear locker (TRD OR). I have changed the gear oil in the rear axle, but I can't remember if I needed an additive? I'm thinking that the locker in those years didn't have a limited slip built in. Is that correct?

I can tell you this since I just did my front, rear and transfer case.. Get an extra bottle of fluid because my rear end and transfer case took a little more than expected. Not sure if this is because I kept pumping while it was dripping down to make sure or if it is because my little pump thing that screws into the bottle doesn't get it all. When I started sucking air, I stopped and poured the rest of that bottle into another and kept going. Hard to tell exactly how much went in but I know it was more that I was originally planning.

I remember this happening to me the last time. That's why I was thinking that 2 gallons would be good. The total capacity is actually 7.6 quarts, which would leave almost half a quart "extra".
